The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The School of Global Studies (SGS) at the University of Gothenburg invites applications for a two-year full-time postdoctoral research fellowship. The position forms part of a research project led by Professor Jan Aart Scholte on 'Legitimacy outside the State: Governing the Global Internet'. The post mainly involves research on this project, but opportunities also exist to finish other publications, as well as to teach (to a maximum 20% of full-time).

The School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg
The School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg produces top-quality research, teaching, and public engagement on today's key global challenges. The staff of over 100 faculty and PhD researchers examines global questions and their governance in disciplines and areas such as peace and security, international relations, development studies, anthropology, regional studies, cultural heritage, environmental studies, gender, human rights, and migration. The School's work is highly international, cross-disciplinary, and policy-relevant.

Project Description
The project 'Legitimacy outside the State: Governing the Global Internet' runs for three years 2018-20 with funding from the Swedish Research Council. It examines the workings of legitimacy in private global governance, using as a case study the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

More specifically, the research investigates: (a) how much legitimacy private global governance attracts; (b) the sources of that legitimacy; (c) the processes that generate legitimation of nonstate governance of global concerns; and (d) the consequences that having or lacking legitimacy has for the operation of private global governance.

These questions are explored through the case of ICANN, a pivotal regulatory body for the global Internet and one of the furthest developed arrangements of private authority in world politics. Unique access to ICANN policy circles is used to conduct an elite survey of 300 respondents, generating rich qualitative and quantitative data for the first comprehensive and systematic analysis of legitimacy in private global governance.

The project is closely aligned with a concurrent six-year research programme on Legitimacy in Global Governance (LegGov), with fifteen researchers at the Universities of Gothenburg, Lund and Stockholm. The postdoc will thereby be part of a vibrant larger research endeavour. SGS also includes a supportive interdisciplinary research cluster on Regional and Global Governance.

Job particulars
Within the project the postdoctoral fellow will contribute: (a) to the theoretical framing; (b) to the preparation and execution of a survey interview questionnaire; (c) to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data; and (e) to author, singly and jointly, publications from the data. The project includes funds for fieldwork at ICANN meetings as well as presentations at academic conferences.

Eligibility
Applicants are expected to hold a doctoral degree from Sweden or an equivalent degree from another country by the date of the application deadline. Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline and who have not held a postdoc position within the same or similar subject area at the University of Gothenburg for more than one year. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, etc.

Assessment
Applications will be judged against the primary criteria of: (a) theoretical and empirical knowledge of global governance in general and Internet governance in particular; (b) demonstrated skills in both qualitative and quantitative research methods; (c) publication potential; (d) full fluency in spoken and written English; (e) capacity to work in a research team; and (f) ability to communicate research findings to societal audiences beyond academia. Other language competence, particularly in French and Spanish, can be an additional asset.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for two years with a fixed term contract with at least 80 percent dedicated to research and up to 20 percent other duties (usually teaching or supervision). Interviews will be held 8 February 2018. The preferred start date is 1 April 2018, or later per agreement.
