We are looking for an innovative and highly motivated scientist for a consultant assignment at AstraZeneca's Translational Biomarker Team within the Translational Science Department in the CardioVascular & Metabolic Diseases Medicine Unit (CVMD). You will be part of a creative and flexible team that investigates novel therapies for heart failure, diabetes, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and, chronic kidney disease.

The Arena
Translational Sciences drives human target identification, patient segmentation and biomarker development based on understanding of human diseases and access to human patient derived cells and tissue samples. Critical is the development of a biomarker strategy, which supports all our projects with a set of appropriate biomarkers to provide an integrated set of data around the compound and target throughout all phases in discovery and development.
Tasks and responsibilities / The role
The successful candidate will be lab based and will contribute for building the biomarker strategy in the CVMD projects. This will involve defining necessary procedures, developing analytical methods using ligand binding techniques (e.g. ELISA, IHC), and / or mass spectrometry based approaches, implementation of the methods to support human target validation, and patient segmentation.
The Senior Scientist is responsible for delivering high quality biomarker data to support CVMD project portfolio. He/she develops methodology for quantification of biomarkers in plasma or other matrices using state of the art analytical techniques and reports methodology, biomarker data and evaluation to the project team.
The role requires interactive, effective communication providing clear data and interpretation to projects and contribution to the TS scientific strategy. The role requires making judgements about complex scientific information sets, developing innovative solutions and applying comprehensive cross-functional understanding.
Requirements
• Expertise in range of technical skills, specifically immunoassay/ELISA platforms (MSD, Gyros, Luminex etc), as well as immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridisation
• Experience in mass spectrometry for analysis of biomarkers and other automated processing and analysis equipment would be advantageous
• Develop and set up bioanalytical methods for quantification of biomarkers for the CVMD projects.
• Perform problem solving studies by identification of issues and where necessary designing experiments to overcome problems
• Identify new approaches and technologies that would improve our ability to support projects
• Maintain awareness of relevant areas of research, drug discover/development technologies and regulatory requirements through reading scientific literature and guidelines
• Plan and report all work to appropriate standards (Good Laboratory Standard, GLS) and keep project teams appraised of findings
• Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written
Minimum experience
Suitable candidates should have a Ph.D in a relevant scientific discipline.
Preferred experience/requirements.
• Strong practical experience in assay development, enzyme kinetics, and biomarker analysis using a variety of platforms
• Significant experience in development of biomarker immunoassay methods
• Experience in various mass spectrometry instrumentation and liquid chromatography separation techniques
• Experience in biology of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases
• Track record of working collaboratively in project teams to ensure timely delivery of project goals.
