At Research and Development you will be a key contributor to the next generation outstanding luxury cars from Volvo. Together with other engineers around the world, you and your team will create innovative human-centric car technology that makes life less complicated and more enjoyable for people. Are you interested in design and connected car technology? Do you share our passion for people, the environment and our urge to create a superior driving experience? Research and Development is the place for you to prosper.

This thesis work will be carried out within the Craftsmanhship & Durability Centre, which is a part of VCC 's Research and Development organization.

Background

To meet future 2020+ need for vehicle energy consumption a technology step by introducing carbon fibre composites (CFRP) on structural parts, mainly BIW, is foreseen. A cost-efficient, yet robust, design methodology for CFRP structures must be developed.

Out of plane stress components are often neglected for steel structures. However, for composite structures these can be critical. In works performed at Volvo cars, a post-processing method for shell models proposed by Rolfes et al, are used to determine the full stress tensor.

Scope

Implement the procedure proposed by Rolfes for doubly curved shell elements to predict the full stress tensor from shell element results. Once the implementation is working, understanding where the limitations with the implementation are is important. This can be for example geometry of the elements, e.g. arbitrary quadrilaterals, bending modes that are not in line with the element. It can also be the geometry that the element represent and ratios thereof, curvatures, thickness, curvature to element length, curvature to thickness, etc.

If the implementation is done in a modularised way these can be used with commercial software such as MetaPost and OptiStruct if converted to Fortran / C++. In combination with commercial codes this can be used for direct post processing of out-of-plane stresses from shell models and design optimisations.
