The Cellular Reagents and Assay Development capability, within the Reagents and Assay Development Department (RAD) of Discovery Sciences, is responsible for the generation of novel cellular reagents and test systems (assays) to support projects in all phases of the drug discovery pipeline.

There is an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated individual to lead the Cellular RAD group. The successful individual will be a key member of the Department, leading cellular reagents and assay development activities in support of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Diseases (CVMD) and Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmunity (RIA) iMed's drug discovery projects.

The role will be based at the largest AstraZeneca R&D site near Gothenburg Sweden. The site has more than 2500 employees and houses world class R&D facilities. Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden (550,000 people) with a rich diversity of culture and leisure activities. It has an international airport with connections to major European cities.

The role
The job holder will lead all aspects of the Cellular RAD team, which is responsible for the generation of validated cellular reagents and assays to support all phases of CVMD and RIA drug discovery projects. The portfolio of activities typically comprises reagent and assay development for HTS, SAR screening, mechanism-of-action studies, phenotypic discovery and target validation and the team works in close partnership with the other disciplines within global RAD and other functions within Discovery Sciences, as well as colleagues in the iMed therapy areas.

The Team Leader will be responsible for setting and maintaining the highest scientific standards, developing the discipline to meet future demands, leading and developing staff to maximize their potential. The role holder will also ensure flexible resourcing of a number of projects according to agreed priorities.

The role requires a high level of interactive, effective communication to set clear direction for the team and directly advise others at a high level, as well as cultural sensitivity. In this role, the Team Leader will be required to make complex judgments, develop innovative solutions and apply a comprehensive cross-functional and industry understanding.
