We are now looking to hire a Team Leader within Physical and Analytical Chemistry for the department of Medicinal Chemistry, Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity Innovative Medicines (RIA IMED).



RIA IMED develops novel drugs for the treatment of conditions such as asthma and COPD. The Physical & Analytical chemistry team supports the RIA drug discovery programs by applying state-of-the-art analytical, physical and structural chemistry methods to determine the identity and structure of drug molecules and to study their behavior in solution or bound to target proteins. Our main approaches relies on NMR and MS based techniques. The team operates in a highly cross disciplinary environment in close collaboration with scientists from the Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Science departments to advance the RIA project pipeline.



As Team Leader within Physical and Analytical Chemistry you will get the opportunity to lead development and adaption of new Physical and Analytical Chemistry methodology at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department. Demonstrate impact on multiple projects across the RIA IMED and influence the analytical chemistry community globally within AZ. You will ensure uptake of scientific developments in the area of Physical and Analytical Chemistry cross AZ chemistry departments. Influence projects by highlighting opportunities created by recent progress in the area. Identify and drive strategic collaborations and publication opportunities. You will also continuously publish and present results from own scientific work. A member of the department leadership team you will contribute to the development of the long-term strategic direction of the RIA IMED chemistry department.



Major Duties and Responsibilities:

* Lead the application of Physical and Analytical Chemistry based methods in drug discovery, continuously develop the scientific basis of the team to address current and future needs
* Present and inform internal stakeholders as well as the broader scientific community on scientific achievements made within the team
* Advise drug project teams, senior leaders, mentor peers and junior scientists on the application of state of the art Physical and Analytical Chemistry methods in drug discovery
* Initiate and lead collaborations with external scientific experts
* Manage performance reviews and salary setting of your direct reports



Essential Requirements

* PhD in physical or analytical chemistry or corresponding experience from relevant field
* In-depth scientific knowledge in the area of modern physical, structural and analytical chemistry applied to drug discovery
* Significant experience from the use and application of modern analytical, biophysical, structural chemistry methods, primarily NMR and/or MS-based techniques applied to the progress of drug discovery projects
* Excellent interpersonal skills, approachable, ability to prioritise workload
* Ability to prioritize workload and manage challenging staff situations.
* Coaching and motivating team members in their scientific development.
* Ability to collaborate in cross functional teams.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
