Senior Research Scientist -Mechanistic Biology & Profiling - Discovery Sciences, AstraZeneca

The Role

A temporary position has arisen for a highly motivated Senior Research Scientist to join the Mechanistic Biology & Profiling Department within the Discovery Sciences IMED Biotech Unit in Gothenburg, Sweden. Leading from the bench, you will apply proven biochemistry and cell biology expertise in microplate formats and a passion for driving scientific questions, combined with strong team working ethics, to drug discovery projects. You will join one of our teams whose remit is to support IMED projects globally with delivery of SAR profiling and mechanism of action data for project compounds.

The position is a temporary assignment lasting from beginning of June until end of October.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This is a lab-based role, providing in vitro target-based and phenotypic screening to support projects in all phases of the discovery process. The role involves delivery of high quality biological profiling to our drug discovery projects, including independent planning and execution of experiments, troubleshooting and timely reporting of data according to agreed timelines. Additional duties involve taking a supporting role in data analysis and reporting using dedicated software.

Essential Requirements

* Candidates should have a Ph.D. or a first degree and at least 4 years ' experience within a relevant scientific discipline
* Documented expertise in cell-based screening of mammalian cell types is an absolute requirement
* Theoretical understanding of assay design relevant to the pharmacology of the drug target and a practical understanding of assay optimisation and use of statistical tools to enable generation of robust, reproducible and sensitive assays
* Broad practical knowledge of common detection technologies and technology platforms compatible with microplate-based cellular assays, with prior experience of imaging, flow cytometry and transcriptomics readouts considered especially meriting
* Deep understanding of data analysis and conversion of screening data to biological parameters. Demonstrated expertise in the coordination and maintenance of dedicated software for small-molecule screening data is a bonus
* Excellent communication skills and an ability to operate effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environmen
* tProven ability in providing technical leadership and guidance to others
* Maintain an awareness of relevant scientific and technical advances to help identify opportunities for capability development
* Scientific visibility and leadership through project contributions, internal presentations and external publications
* Excellent problem solving skills, not limited to own area of expertise
* First rate decision making skills, coupled with tenacity to see decisions through, even in situations of ambiguity
* Recognized scientific expertise within the area of cell biology as applied to screening and will function as a scientific expert within project teams
* Good understanding of drug discovery and how to translate their scientific expertise into new project and business opportunities
