We are now recruiting a Senior Scientist with expertise in Histology / Morphology to join the Cell and Molecular Pharmacology (CMP) team within the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases (CVMD) therapeutic area at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, Sweden. The position focus on the pathology of Chronic Kidney Diseases (CDK)



CVMD is one of the three main therapeutic research areas within Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED), AstraZeneca's small molecule biotech unit that deliver candidate drugs into late-stage clinical development. The CMP team delivers key data to projects across all CVMD areas and phases of the drug discovery and development process. We work with different technologies such as high content biology, digital pathology, flow cytometry, histology, automation and label-free technology.



As a Senior Scientist you will play a key role in supporting and driving CKD projects forward by delivering data and providing scientific input and expertise within the histology/morphology area. Collaboration is critical for successful delivery of drug projects and you will work closely with pathologists/scientists/teams from a wide range of different functions within AstraZeneca as well as with external partners and collaborators. You will have the opportunity to try novel techniques and ideas required for progressing existing portfolio and novel science.



Main Duties and Responsibilities

We are looking for an individual with a strong background in Kidney histology/morphology and a broad overall knowledge in histology, automated image analysis and stereology. As a senior scientist you will:

* Serve as an expert within histology/morphology and mentor colleagues in the area
* Independently develop histology methods for projects from pre-target identification to clinical stage
* Independently design and execute experiments
* Statistical analysis and interpretation of generated data
* Presentation of data at team and project team level
* Ensure that your work is performed and documented in accordance to AstraZeneca standards
* Work collaboratively with other scientists as required to ensure flow-scheme connectivity and translatability between in vivo results and histology readouts
* Work collaboratively within Bioscience and IMED to deliver on project key questions
* Contribute proactively to a vibrant and innovative working environment where improvements and new ideas are adopted and freely shared



Essential Requirements

* Master's, PhD or equivalent academic merits and experience within kidney histology/morphology
* Excellent understanding of histological techniques such as immunohistochemistry
* Excellent knowledge in imaging capturing, storing and analysis, morphometry and stereology
* Excellent written and oral communication skills including enhanced presentation skills
* Track record of scientific excellence in terms of publications and/or conference presentations
* Good collaboration skills
* Strong oral and written communication skills in English



Desirable Requirements

* Previous experience of driving science and working in projects using histological readouts
* Background in drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry
* Experience with
* Automated immunohistochemical staining equipment such as Ventana, Bond, Intellipath etc
* Automated image capturing such as Zeiss Mirax Scan or Aperio
* Automated microscopy analysis such as Visiopharm
* Downstream data analysis and visualisation (Spotfire, etc.)
