The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is seeking a Senior Researcher for its China and Asia Security programme. SIPRI's China and Asia Security programme is part of the Conflict and peace research area. SIPRI's China and Asia Security programme aims to advance peace and security studies with a particular emphasis on China but also other Asian countries' role and impact in global, non-traditional and transnational security.ContextSIPRI is an independent international institute whose core mission is to undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace. Main tasks and responsibilitiesThe Senior Researcher is responsible for directing a range of tasks, including the following:Prepare the overall programme design and strategy, which includes the research agenda, budget, fundraising strategy, staffing targets and an outreach plan;Coordinate and participate in collecting, processing, analyzing and disseminating data and analysis, and conducting research;Fundraise for the programme and advising others in the programme on fundraising strategies;Manage and mentor staff in line with the programme's strategy, SIPRI policy and in cooperation with the Director of Studies; andMaintain a steady pace of high-quality publications and other forms of outreach, in accordance with SIPRI's productivity requirements. RequirementsThe successful candidate will have the following experience and skills:At least 5-6 years of experience as a researcher initiating, fundraising for and carrying out her/his own research projects;A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research; andA strong and deep knowledge of Asia, combined with a detailed knowledge of key security, conflict and peace issues in China and at least one other Asian country. Knowledge and skillsWhen starting the position, the Senior Researcher should have as a minimum, the following knowledge and skills:Strong knowledge of peace, conflict, stability and fragility issues in the region;Sound academic or professional background in conflict analysis and conflict resolution;Proficiency in an Asian language, preferably Mandarin, as well as English; andA university degree or degrees, in disciplines and topics relevant to this post, at a Master's or Doctoral level, or publications to a Doctoral degree standard. Contract period Starting 1 September 2019 as soon as possible. The appointment will be for two years initially with a possible extension of up to 6 years. The post is full-time and the successful applicant will be expected to reside in Stockholm. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
