We now offer a unique opportunity for you with experience and skills in New Modalities chemistry and with a special interest in bridging chemistry and biology. We look for you with high ambitions and a desire to work with an open minded experienced team to push the boundaries of science in a unique setting between industry (AstraZeneca) and academia (Max-Planck Institute). You will be employed by AstraZeneca, Sweden but the position is placed at the Max-Planck Institute in Dortmund, Germany.

AstraZeneca is a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical company that, in addition to being one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies, provide an environment employees are empowered to express diverse perspectives, and are made to feel valued, energized and rewarded for their ideas and creativity.

The Innovative Medicines (IMED) Biotech Unit of Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic (CVRM) is one of AstraZeneca 's core therapy areas. We push the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines to patients suffering from Heart Failure, Diabetes or Chronic Kidney Disease. To realize our ambitions we stay agnostic to molecular modality. The Medicinal Chemistry Department within the CVMD IMED is a critical player in the discovery and design of our drug molecules and in identifying and validating novel biological targets.

We drive our pipeline and the areas of scientific leadership to a large extent in collaborations with world experts which provides you as a scientist with the unique opportunity to access the most advanced knowledge and opportunities to stay at the fore-front of science.

Setting

You will be a senior member of the AstraZeneca Satellite Unit at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology, in Dortmund, Germany, which was established in 2015. There, AstraZeneca scientists from CVRM iMED are directly embedded in the academic environment of the group of Prof. Herbert Waldmann. Researchers from industry and from academia are working side-by-side in the same laboratories to address challenging therapeutic targets through novel strategies in the New Modalities area. As Senior Scientist, you will demonstrate expertise in the area of New Modalities Medicinal Chemistry (e.g. peptides, macrocyles, PROTACs, RNA etc). You will also actively contribute to project strategies, compound design and synthesis, data generation and data interpretation in projects at the MPI Satellite unit as well as in AZ portfolio projects. This requires an active collaboration not only with the project team at the MPI and but also with the New Modalities chemistry team at AstraZeneca Gothenburg. The role is chemistry centric but will include application of chemical biology techniques in collaboration with the experts at the MPI.

Key success factors for role

* Expert knowledge of synthetic chemistry related to at least one area of New Modalities such as peptides, macrocycles, PROTACs or oligonucleotides.
* Openness and willingness to generate data using a wide set of chemical biology and biochemistry techniques
* Ability to design and execute experiments autonomously and show creativity in solving wide range of scientific challenges
* High quality and consistent delivery from own work
* Excellent teamwork, collaboration and communication within team and across both Prof. Herbert Waldmanns team at the MPI and AstraZeneca CVRM chemistry teams in Gothenburg.
* Excellent awareness of current developments in New Modalities
* Demonstrate scientific leadership by publishing in peer reviewed journals or present at internal/external conferences.

Minimum requirements

* Ph. D. degree or corresponding experience in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or Chemical Biology related to New Modalities. 2+-year post-doctoral experience in academic or industrial setting preferred
* Synthetic chemistry related to New Modalities; ability to plan, prioritise and perform work independently including retro-synthesis and route design
* Scientific Creativity, including the ability to identify, develop and apply new technologies and ways of working within New Modalities chemistry.
* Will be a highly self-motivated, scientifically critical individual capable of receiving and analyzing input from complex data and deciding on focused course of action.
* Excellent awareness of recent literature within field of expertise
