We are now hiring a Senior Research Scientist with focus on Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry in the area of Research and Early Development in Respiratory & Immunology within AZ 's BioPharmaceutical R&D - right in the middle of AstraZeneca's vibrant R&D site in Sweden



The medicinal chemistry team in Early R&I is passionate about driving discovery research to deliver world-class medicines with an emphasis on small to large sized synthetically accessible molecules. This includes classical small molecules, peptides, oligonucleotides and conjugates. We are now further growing our portfolio in the area of PROteolysis Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs). Our team operates in a cross-disciplinary environment working together with biologists, DMPK experts and Pharmaceutical Scientists to advance the R&I project pipeline.



The successful candidate will join a highly coordinated discovery team using innovative medicinal chemistry to invent novel medicines. The position includes synthesis, purification and characterization of lead molecules from target validation to lead optimization - certainly including compound design and medicinal chemistry aspects with a focus on PROTACs. The candidate will ensure uptake of novel scientific developments in synthetic organic chemistry into AstraZeneca 's medicinal chemistry project teams and influence compound design by generating completely novel ideas for our molecules. You will find yourself in a strong science-driven environment and it will definitely include opportunities to share scientific findings and publish novel science.



We are looking for a results-oriented standout colleague with a strong scientific background in organic chemistry including excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries. We rely on a person with a problem-solving attitude with delivery focus, and a strong interest to continuously develop new skills in medicinal chemistry.



Major Duties and Responsibilities

* Actively contribute to R&I 's PROTAC portfolio projects with compound design and synthesis
* Provide state-of-the-art Synthetic Chemistry to projects at all stages of drug discovery
* Deliver high quality drug molecules and tool compounds
* Apply synthetic skills with an idea generation approach, learning to efficiently troubleshoot Medicinal Chemistry problems while maintaining a clear focus and impact on project progression
* Continuously expand expertise in PROTAC Medicinal Chemistry aspects
* Drive R&I 's scientific reputation by identifying and contributing to publication opportunities internally, across AZ and/or together with external partners
* Follow safety requirements and all AZ corporate responsibility policies



Essential Requirements

We search for an entrepreneurial scientist with a strong synthetic background and the desire to grow and develop as a medicinal chemist.

* PhD in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or Biochemistry
* Postdoctoral and/or industrial experience is a plus - as is previous work on PROTACs
* In-depth scientific knowledge in the area of modern synthetic chemistry
* Up-to-date with modern purification and analytical techniques
* A proven track record of delivery from own experimental work
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills
* Basic knowledge of drug discovery in the pharmaceutical industry is a plus
