We are now looking to hire a Senior Research Scientist - Lung Epithelium. The position will be placed in Gothenburg, Sweden.
As Senior Research Scientist - Lung Epithelium you will be placed in the Bioscience Lung Epithelium Department within the Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmunity IMED. The department is dedicated to conducting research to promote lung epithelial health with the aim to develop novel treatments for respiratory diseases including COPD, Asthma and pulmonary fibrosis. Key research areas include (1) epithelial barrier function (mucus hypersecretion, cilia function, inflammation/resolution, tight junctions/desmosomes, exosomes) and (2) epithelial senescence (senescent phenotype/markers, oxidative stress, autophagy/mitophagy, DNA damage response, apoptosis/necroptosis/ferroptosis) as core biology focus areas. The Lung Epithelium Department offers a dynamic and science-centric research environment bringing together internal scientists, post-docs and students and, importantly, external academic collaborators with the shared ambition to do great science in order to address unmet patient needs.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
* Works independently designing, performing and analysing experiments and identifies and solves associated problems.
* Interprets experimental data and plans of further experiments.
* Effectively supports drug discovery projects to meet objectives and milestones.
* Can conduct more than one area of work in parallel meeting agreed timelines.
* Generates peer-reviewed publications and presents her/his work at external academic scientific meetings.
* Uses her/his scientific knowledge to influence project progression in accordance with portfolio priorities.
* Maintains an awareness of current scientific developments and trends.
* Independently schedules work-plans over agreed timelines so that the team objectives are met.
* Participates in and/or manages external collaborations.
* Generates post doc project proposals and potentially supervises students and post docs.
Essential Requirements
* PhD with Post-doc or otherwise relevant experimental experience.
* Experience in handling and characterizing airway epithelial cells, especially small airway epithelial cells and alveolar Type 2 cells.
* Experience with epithelial air liquid interface cultures.
* An understanding of respiratory diseases.
* Excellent scientific laboratory skills and an ability to apply methods and technologies of basic cell biology, pharmacology, biochemistry or immunology to address key research questions.
* Good networking and communication skills and a strong delivery focus
Desirable Requirements
* A strong scientific publication record.
* Experience with complex 3D epithelial co-culture systems (e.g. macrophages, fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells) at ALI or as spheroids.
* Experience with 3D lung tissue cultures (3D-LTC).
* Experience with gene knock-down/overexpression in primary human epithelial cells.
