We are looking for a Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering with a genuine interest in teaching. In collaboration with other academics at the department, you will educate the civil and structural engineers of the future, and also contribute to bridging the education in civil engineering, architecture and engineering, and architecture. The position is a full-time permanent faculty employment, to start as soon as possible.

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering
The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering (ACE) has about 290 employees working on every aspect of the built environment - houses to live in, roads to travel on, and water to drink - from planning and design to construction and maintenance. Together, we provide a comprehensive environment for civil engineering and architecture, well equipped to tackle the challenges of building a sustainable future. We have well-equipped research and teaching labs; for this position especially our Structures lab and Architecture workshop (wood workshop) are of interest. The department also benefits from being physically located next to Chalmers Fuse, a makerspace for the unique educational initiative called Tracks, offering students interdisciplinary courses in collaboration between different programmes.

The Division of Structural Engineering
The position is placed at the Division of Structural Engineering, one of ten divisions at ACE. The Division of Structural Engineering consists of two research groups: Lightweight Structures (Steel and Timber Structures), and Concrete Structures. In total, we are 6-7 faculty members, 2 Postdocs, 8-10 PhD students and several adjunct professors and guest researchers, working part time at the university and part time in industry. Our education and research deal with load-carrying capacity, stability, functional design and durability of structures, such as bridges and buildings.

Within the field of Structural Engineering, we provide basic courses and supervise thesis work in the 3 and 5- year programmes in Civil Engineering, as well as the programme Architecture and Engineering. We are also one of two divisions mainly responsibility for the MSc programme Structural Engineering and Building Technology. We provide material-specific courses in timber, steel and concrete structures, as well as courses on the structural design process. We also supervise about 50 students doing their Master thesis yearly.

Our field of research comprises structural design and analysis of structures for buildings, bridges and other structures in the built environment. The research field includes the entire life-cycle of structures, from conceptual through detail design and construction aspects, to assessment, management and refurbishment of existing structures. We work both with traditional structural materials like timber, steel and concrete, as well as with new materials and material combinations such as fibre and textile reinforced concrete.

Major responsibilities
As Senior Lecturer, you will strengthen the Division of Structural Engineering primarily within the basic education, and to a lesser extent within cooperation with the industry and research. You will contribute with pedagogical and scientific expertise, and will be responsible for parts of the basic education in Structural Engineering. Your main focus will be general courses on structures at the Bachelors level including all materials, but you will also be involved in courses at the Masters level on e.g. the structural design process and timber structures. You will supervise Bachelor and Master students in their thesis projects. Cooperation as part of the teacher's team and the research group is vital, but you will also need to be able to work independently.

For both the education and research, it is important to maintain good cooperation with the industry and the other actors in the building sector. Together with the building industry, we are running the Structural Engineering Centre with over 20 companies. If suitable, we think you could strengthen the centre as part of your work assignments.

By joining ongoing research projects and contributing to raising funding for new projects, you will also participate in research within Structural Engineering. We highly value if your research competence is within an area showing future needs in education and good possibilities for research funding, as well as if it complements our existing competences and has synergistic effects with our ongoing research. Some examples of such research areas are structural optimisation, parametric design, and timber and biobased structures. However, other research areas within Structural Engineering are also of interest.

The main responsibilities of the position include:
• To lead, develop and teach courses on all levels of our education
• To supervise students in our Bachelor and Master educational programs
• To collaborate with industry and society as well as within academia, both in Sweden and internationally
• To apply for research funding and perform research.

Other tasks at the division or department level may also be included.

Contract terms
Full-time permanent employment.
