MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.
The MAX IV Controls and IT team deliver solutions to the whole MAX IV organisation in the areas of control system hardware, controls software applications, infrastructure and networking, information management and scientific software. This is a dynamic and highly challenging environment and requires close collaboration with the staff in order to understand the needs and be effective in forming solutions. We are around 30 people in total who work in 5 domains in a well organised and agile way. We hold values of lean management, knowledge spread, user autonomy, continuous improvement and flexibility as guiding principles for our work.
The smooth functioning of the MAX IV synchrotron facility relies heavily on the efficient and flexible operation of the entire IT infrastructure.
Experiments located at the MAX IV beamlines are collecting data which has to be delivered to storage and compute resources on- as well as off-site, to be processed according to workflows specific to various scientific domains. We are currently looking for an innovative system administrator in the domain of scientific data processing, to complement our IT infrastructure team in the development, deployment and operation of a modern computing facility.
The successful candidate will be member of the IT Infrastructure Team, and work closely with MAX IV's beamline scientists, as well as in close collaboration with the Controls and Data Management Teams at MAX IV, as well as LUNARC - the center for scientific and technical computing at the Lund University.
Work Tasks:
- Responsible for system administration of MAX IV's servers and High Performance Computing cluster
- Development and operation of virtual environment (VMs and containers) for scientific data processing
- Technical support of beamline staff and visiting scientists in the computing domain
- Participation in the design of the next generation IT infrastructure
Qualifications:
- Solid understanding of Linux and Windows operating systems
- 5+ years experience in system administration in scientific environment
- Experience with automation and orchestration; development and deployment of virtualized platforms, VM and container based
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Fluent in English
Additional meriting qualifications:
- Experience with operation of synchrotron beamlines
- Experience with the Ansible platform
- Familiarity with DevOps culture
