The European Spallation Source (ESS) will be a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world's most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules.
The ESS project is partnered by 16 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019.
ESS AB is a public limited company, currently owned by the Swedish Government. ESS AB is in charge of planning, projecting, financing, constructing, owning and operating the ESS. ESS AB is currently recruiting highly skilled and motivated scientists and engineers for the three year Pre-Construction Phase.

Description of department The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the ESS accelerator, in collaboration with partner institutions and with other divisions of the ESS.Description of main responsibilitiesThe employee will lead the RF Group within the Accelerator Division of the ESS AB. The group leader will play a major role in the preparation of a 'complete and reviewable" Technical Design Report for the ESS, to be delivered by the Design Update collaboration by the end of 2012. The ESS RF group will continue to expand after 2012, to play a key role during ESS fabrication and installation, and becoming a central player during RF system commissioning, operations, and subsequent development. The successful candidate will help to supervise and mentor junior members of the RF group. He or she will extrapolate from lessons learned during previous extensive experience at other superconducting linacs in operation, and/or in design, interpreting and applying these lessons to the ESS design. The group leader will liaise closely with the leaders and members of all 8 work packages in the Design Update collaboration (lead by partner institutions across Europe). He or she will co-operate on all aspects of RF in the baseline ESS design, working particularly closely with the Spoke Resonator, Elliptical Cavity, and RF Systems work packages.The RF group leader will work under the supervision of the Accelerator Division leader. Significant travel to ESS collaboration partners will be required.Qualifications A PhD (or its equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Accelerator Physics, or in a closely related field.Approximately 10 years or more of experience in accelerator RF Systems, including superconducting RF, since PhD.Demonstrated ability to work with others, including prior team leadership. Significant publication record.
Experience of working in an international environment is essential. Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
