The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 49 000 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. The Institute is composed of the following four departments: The Department of Infectious Diseases, The Department of Microbiology and Immunology, The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology, The Department of Laboratory Medicine.

At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 440 million SEK in total assets.

The laboratory of Dr. Thaher Pelaseyed (www.pelaseyedlab.org) at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Institute of Biomedicine at University of Gothenburg is seeking motivated individuals for a research position.

Job assignments
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional, long-term intestinal disorder characterized by cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation. Approximately 40% of patients suffering from diarrheal IBS are infected with Brachyspira species that attach head-on to the brush border of colonic epithelial cells, creating a "false" brush border. Despite the prevalence of IBS, the nature of Brachyspira attachment to host cells is not known. The goal of the research project is to elucidate how Brachyspira interacts with apical aspects of colonic intestinal epithelial cells. The applicant will perform basic research including discovery of bacterial and host factors responsible for the intimate attachment of Brachyspira to host epithelial cells in culture and derived from patient biopsies. The project includes biochemical approaches combined with advanced confocal microscopy and mass spectrometry. The project will take place in Mucin Biology Groups, amidst the largest collection of scientists in the world working on mucins and bacterial interactions (see www.pelaseyedlab.org and www.medkem.gu.se/mucinbiology/).

Qualifications
This position is open to PhDs within fields of cell biology, biochemistry and/or microbiology. The applicant has documented experience in mammalian cell culture methodology, biochemical methods including protein expression and purification in bacterial and mammalian cells, and protein labeling techniques. Proficiency in propagation of bacterial strains in aerobic and anaerobic settings and documented skills in molecular biology including molecular cloning is a requirement. Experience from confocal microscopy and image analysis is preferred. The applicant has practical experience of mass spectrometry, proteomics and downstream data analysis. The successful applicant is highly motivated and collaborative and should also have demonstrated the ability to work independently as well as in research teams. Excellent verbal communication and writing skills in English are a precondition. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Employment
The employment is limited (temporary) for 5 months and full-time with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
