The unit of Occupational and Environmental Medicine is part of the Institute of Medicine, and is an integrated department with staff from the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the University of Gothenburg. We investigate and research the effects of exposure to chemical substances, physical factors, ergonomics, vibration and stress at work and in the environment.
The Sound Environment and Health research group (www.amm.se/soundenvironment) studies how and to what extent human health is influenced by sounds in different environments and contexts, taking into account factors such as psychoacoustics, stress and individual sensitivity. The research aims at preventing negative impacts of noise on health, sleep and recovery, learning opportunities in school and preschool, as well as hearing-related disorders. In our unique sound environment laboratory, we study how sound characteristics and vibration lead to negative effects, for example on sleep.
Job assignments
The Sound Environment and Health research group at Occupational and Environmental Medicine seeks a researcher to work independently with experimental studies investigating the impact of noise and vibration on people's sleep. To measure sleep and sleep effects, the method of polysomnography involved measurements via electrodes attached to the head and body, including electrical activity in the brain and heart. The tasks include analysing data from sleep studies, both survey and polysomnogram data, using statistical models. In addition, an important part of the work is the writing of scientific articles in English based on the trials and analyses, including work with figures, illustrations and tables. Some teaching may also occur.
Qualifications
The applicant should hold a doctorate in environmental medicine or a related field. Applicants should be fluent both in spoken and written English. The successful candidate must be highly motivated and interested in the link between
vibration/noise sleep and other health outcomes. Personal qualities such as the ability to work individually and within a team, attention to detail, precision and initiative-taking behavior are desirable.
Desirable Qualifications:
• Well documented experience of sleep research related to environmental impact and experience with polysomnography
(PSG) or electroencephalography (EEG).
• Very good knowledge of acoustics and vibration, relevant for exposure in residential environments.
• Good publication record in international peer-reviewed journals
