The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of microorganisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. The Institute is composed of the following five departments: . The Department of Infectious Diseases . The Department of Microbiology and Immunology . The Department of Pathology and Genetics . The Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine . The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology At present, the institute has about 350 employees and approximately 290 million SEK in total assets.

The researcher employed will decipher commonalities and differences between protein homeostasis and the protein quality control systems of bacterial and eukaryotic cells during cellular aging/starvation. The project uses two unicellular models, Neisseria gonorrhoeae och Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Special emphasis is directed towards the recognition of damaged proteins, the aggregation of such proteins, and the asymmetrical inheritance of aggregates during cell division. Further, the project will analyze how cellular aging/starvation is affecting the function of protein homeostasis and how this, in turn, may influence the buildup of cytotoxic aggregates, virulence, and antibiotic resistance (Neisseria gonorrhoeae). The job includes research and supervision of doctoral candidates as well as postdoctoral fellows.

An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for the position and the documented expertise should be in relevant areas according to the specific position and project description stated here. We are looking for a scholar with well-documented merits in microbiological studies using both Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as model systems. The successful applicant should have experience in molecular/genetic techniques, light microscopy, microbial culturing techniques, MIC-tests, and virulence studies in transgenic mice. Documented (peer-reviewed original papers) expertise in working with in these areas are regarded as an advantage
