The Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (SBT) forms part of the Faculty of Forest Sciences, has about 50 employees and is located in both Umeå and Uppsala. The department carries out high quality research and under- and postgraduate education on a high international level and collaborates with society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an important resource. The major focus in Umeå lies on value chains in the bio-based industry, where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified / processed, used and re-used cost-effectively for different purposes while forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably. In Uppsala, the focus lies on wood science and technology with research and education on wood materials from nano to macro levels, wood adhesives and composites, and with accredited testing of wood products and treatments for the market.

Work and duties:
Formaldehyse-based adhesives are the most common adhesives used today in the wood industry. However, the strive for sustainability and health issues of harmful emmissions push towards the development of alternative bio-adhesives. Natural binders such as starches, lignin and proteins are generally speaking not reactive enough to meet the requirements in applications, and so they require high amounts of synthetic crosslinkers. Although there are many potential chemical compounds available that could be used to modify the natural binders, the lack of knowledge of how the modification is related to the performance is lacking. It is thus needed to collect and translate novel research for developing high-performing bio-adhesives without or minimum amounts of synthetic crosslinkers for more sustainable wood products. Emphasis in this project will be given on starch and associated modification reactions and crosslinking. The project will be conducted at the Fibres and Wood composites group at the SLU campus in Ultuna and with the position, lab responsibility is expected as well as participation in onging EU Horizon and national projects of the group.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science and technology, wood technology or equivalent related discipline. Experience in functionalisation/ modification of naturally-based polymers and cross-linking for use as wood adhesives or similar products is necessary. This involves experiences in using analytical instruments. A successful candidate is expected to have a strong publication record in the field. Supervision of students at undergraduate or postgraduate level in meritous.

The applicant should be able to work independently, should have good communication skills and proven skills in both oral and written scientific English. Proven ability in applying for external research funding is meriting. We will also place emphasis on the applicant's personal characteristics and suitability such as ability to work constructively in a small group and to take own initiatives is very important.
