Research engineer

Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) is a foundation with a global mission of safer use of medicines. Based in Uppsala, Sweden, UMC works on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO) to collect and analyse international patient data with the aim of identifying and explaining problems related to medicines and their use. UMC is a world leader in scientific development in medicines safety monitoring, and provides capacity building in WHO member countries. Our products and services are used by health authorities and companies in the life sciences sector in more than 100 countries. UMC currently has approximately 100 employees.

Join an award-winning, multidisciplinary team committed to enabling safer use of medicines. We are seeking to recruit a research engineer with training in data sciences and solid programming experience to further strengthen our scientific investigations and enhance our research of novel methods for mining big data in the medical domain.

Uppsala Monitoring Centre is responsible for the technical and scientific operations of the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring, an international initiative which focuses on enhancing patient care and safety in relation to the use of medicines, and supports public health programmes by providing reliable, balanced information for the effective assessment of the risk-benefit profile of medicinal drugs. We work with a range of major data sources, from VigiBase®, the WHO Programme's repository of ten million individual case reports from around the world, to electronic patient record systems, and social media. We lead and participate in international collaborative projects together with universities, health authorities, and industry. Main responsibilities:
• Design, code, test and document software applications for data query and analysis of data.
• Participate in the development and evaluation of novel statistical or computational methods for analyzing observational medical data.
• Provide statistical and computational advice for data analysis to internal and external collaborators as well as technical support on database and software-related issues.
• Contribute to international collaborative projects in pharmacovigilance on UMC's behalf.

Competence requirements
We are looking for someone with:
• Master's degree in Computational sciences, Engineering, or Mathematical statistics.
• Expertise in one or more programming languages and data management (SQL)
• Background in data sciences, applied mathematics or statistics.
• Excellent oral and written presentation skills.
• English - fluent written and spoken.

It is an advantage if you also:
• Have training in one or more of the following areas: Data mining, Predictive models, Statistics, Medical informatics, Epidemiology, Natural Language Processing, Causal inference.
• Speak another language in additional to English.

The technical platform and programming languages that we use include Java, Matlab, R, C# and SQL Server.

The position is full-time and begins with a trial period of six months based at the UMC office in Uppsala. Our organisation's operational language is English and all applicants must be proficient in the use of English at work.
