The Legitimacy in Global Governance (LegGov) program seeks a Research Assistant

Project description
LegGov is a six-year research project that is conducted by political scientists from three Swedish universities: Lund University (LU), the University of Gothenburg (GU), and Stockholm University (SU).

LegGov aims to offer a systematic analysis of the legitimacy of Global Governance Institutions (GGIs). The project consists of three subprojects that deal with the following questions: 1) what are the sources of the legitimacy of GGIs? 2) by what processes are GGIs legitimized and delegitimized? and 3) what are the consequences of legitimacy for the functioning of GGIs? The RA will be hired for the third subproject.

Job description
The third subproject assesses how public and political challenges to the legitimacy of 16 Global Governance Institutions (GGIs) affect their functioning (e.g. institutional reform, member state compliance, and staff/budget size). The legitimacy challenges are measured by 'core sentences' in newswire articles. Core sentences deal with actors that challenge the legitimacy of a particular GGI (the target) because of a particular issue. Now that the newswire data has been gathered, the next step is to code the core sentences in terms of the actor, target and issue information. The coding of the newswire articles will be the main responsibility of the RA. He/she will cooperate with another RA at Stockholm University and with Bart Bes, Postdoctoral Fellow in the LegGov project based at Lund University.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must be third-year Bachelor or Master students in either of the social sciences (Anthropology, Communication Science, Political Science, Public Administration, or Sociology), or related disciplines such as Economics, or Psychology.

Assessment criteria
We are looking for candidates with an interest in global governance as well as quantitative research methods, in particular content analysis. Additional merits include the capacity to work in a multinational and interdisciplinary team of researchers.
