Albany International Corp. is a global advanced textiles and materials processing company with two core businesses.  Machine Clothing is the world's leading producer of custom-designed fabrics and belts essential to production in the paper, nonwovens and other process industries.  Albany Engineered Composites is a rapidly growing supplier of highly engineered composite parts for the aerospace industry.

The primary business of Albany International AB Halmstad (Sweden) is supplying the expanding global paper industry with consumable, technologically sophisticated products called paper machine clothing. Paper machine clothing is used to produce all grades of paper from lightweight sanitary tissue to heavyweight container board. These custom-designed engineered fabrics, essential to the paper making process, are manufactured from monofilament and synthetic fiber materials. This basic technology is also utilized for other industrial process applications.

R&D Chemist - purpose of the job and overall responsibility

This position is based in Albany's R&D facilities in Halmstad (Sweden) and reports to the R&D director Process Belts. The R&D chemist will, together with designated teams, contribute to projects directed towards product development, exploring and developing new concepts and materials that can lead to new products or improved processes. This position will also comprise interaction/support to technical and manufacturing teams as required.
Main duties and responsibilities:

• Formulating and designing/ performing/ coordinating products/ tests and experiments.
• Summarizing, analyzing and drawing independent conclusions from test results.
• Performing troubleshooting on problems concerning new products/process as related to design, material, or process.
• Working closely with Product Engineering/ Technical/ Manufacturing to ensure that any changes, as a result of existing or new products, are acceptable.
• Interacting with customers as needed as well as understanding product application and performance requirements.
• Preparing technical documentation for internal and external use.
• Working with application groups to support new and/ or existing products.
• Utilizing computer software, used for research and development, in a Microsoft Windows environment.
• Travelling as necessary to perform assignments.

Requirements and qualifications:

• Good Chemistry education is fundamental. You must have a Degree in Materials/ Chemical Engineering or related subjects: A Masters Degree with 5 years industrial experience, or preferably a PhD Degree with 2 years industrial experience.
• Vast knowledge of thermal, chemical and mechanical tests for materials.
• Characterization and understanding of surfaces and interfaces is extremely critical.
• Special skills in Scanning electron Microscopy, Surface Topography and Materials Processing are strong merits.
• Experience in coating and lamination of substrates is a merit.
• Experience in the textile industry is a merit.

Personal Profile:

• Capable of understanding and utilizing new technologies.
• Comfortable with working alone as well as in a team.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to produce/ work under tight time constrains.
• Speak and write English fluently, knowledge of Swedish language is a merit.
