Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.

The zooplankton research group in Kalmar seeks a project assistant for development of methods to analyze pigments in plankton samples with high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Project title
Pigmentation in Baltic Sea plankton

The research project
Salmon in the Baltic Sea have relatively pale pigmentation in their muscle compared to their counterparts in the Atlantic. This has been suggested to be one of the reasons for the regularly occurring deficiency syndromes in Baltic salmon. These pigments are produced by crustacean zooplankton by use of pigment precursors from their phytoplankton prey. But detailed knowledge about this process as well as the seasonal variation and the species specific production in crustaceans is not well known. This project will include establishment of methods to measure pigments in phytoplankton and zooplankton in high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). There are a number of published methods but these have to be adjusted and developed to meet the challenges of measuring pigments in plankton samples. Work includes carrying out laboratory experiments with plankton communities, development of HPLC-methods and analysis of stored pigment samples.

Qualification requirements
Applicants should have a minimum of an advanced level undergraduate degree (240hp/240ECTS) degree in biology or analytical chemistry.
Applicants should have a documented expertise in running HPLC and a high proficiency in written and spoken English.

Other assessment grounds that would place the candidate at an advantage include experience of working with aquatic ecology methods including measurement of chlorophyll a, CN (particulate organic carbon and nitrogen), POP (particulate organic phosphorous), thiamine, preparation of growth media, culturing of plankton and working with factorial experiments. It is important with the ability to solve problems and the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group. It is advantageous for candidates with an analytical chemistry background to show a documented interest in aquatic biology.
