The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is recruiting a Programme Director to lead its Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-proliferation Programme.

Established in 1966, SIPRI is consistently ranked as one of the world's top think tanks. The institute is dedicated to independent research into peace, conflict and security and is known worldwide for its flagship publication, the SIPRI Yearbook. SIPRI is based in Stockholm with offices in Beijing and Washington, DC, and well-established, on-the-ground partnerships and operational networks across the globe. The staff of SIPRI is international and the working language is English. In recent years SIPRI has expanded its staff and budget while building a dynamic research and outreach agenda that reflects the fast-changing international security order.

Arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation have always been at the core of SIPRIs research agenda. The programmes work has encompassed a broad range of topics related to the legal, political and technical aspects of arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation. The programme has given particular attention to the risks and dangers posed by nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) weapons and ways to reduce them and to analysing the applications of science and technology for arms control verification and non-proliferation purposes. Projects have included cooperation within the European Unions Non-Proliferation Consortium and with the Centre for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament and advisory as well as capacity building activities.

Tasks and responsibilities
The new Programme Director will lead and manage a respected team of researchers and be responsible for (a) developing and implementing an innovative and policy relevant research and outreach agenda; (b) acquiring and implementing external research grants to fund these activities; (c) overseeing the programmes publishing activities, including contributions to the SIPRI Yearbook; (d) networking with key donors, policy makers and media to disseminate the programme?s research and policy findings; and (e) contributing to overall SIPRI activities. Responsibilities will be managed in cooperation with SIPRIs senior management and research team as well as SIPRIs external partners.

Eligibility requirements
SIPRI is looking for a dynamic individual with the potential to develop and lead a world-class research programme. Applicants should have demonstrated strong leadership, fundraising and project-management skills. Prerequisites include a graduate degree (preferably a PhD) in political science, international relations, security studies, economics or a relevant social or natural science as well as at least five years of post-doctoral (or equivalent) experience in the field of arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation as either a researcher or a practitioner. The position also requires excellent communication skills and some experience in dealing with the media. Fluency in English is required; prior knowledge of Swedish is not. The post is full-time and the successful applicant will bfundraising and advisory work of the SIPRI Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-proliferation Programme; and the names of three potential referees to PDArmscontrol2013@sipri.org . The initial closing date is 13 September 2013. Interviews will be held in Stockholm in October.
