The Department of Biology and Environmental Science and the Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Science are parts of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within these multidisciplinary departments include, in addition to natural science didactics; research across the disciplines of biology, biomedical science, chemistry, ecology, and environmental science.

The faculty has offered post-graduate education within science education research since 2003. The broader research environment focusing on science education is a collaboration between the two departments, together with cognate disciplines in the Faculty of Technology and the Faculty of Social Sciences, a university-wide cooperation, through the Centre for Natural Science Didactics. The research focus is on meaning-making of science in educational practice, ranging from preschool to university levels. National as well as international collaborations provide valuable contributions to our various ongoing research projects.
