AstraZeneca R&D, IMED, Gothenburg, Sweden seek to recruit a Principal Scientist, New Modalities Chemistry in the area of Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity (RIA).

Mission

AstraZeneca is committed to the development of the next generation innovative respiratory medicines. The New Modalities Chemistry team in RIA leads the efforts focused on expanding the use of novel peptide and oligonucleotide based modalities and molecular conjugates in the treatment of respiratory diseases. The New Modalities team achieves this in close collaboration with scientists in the Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Science departments - all joined by the goal to discover the respiratory medicines of the future.

Job description

* Develops and leads science in the field of oligonucleotide chemistry at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department
* Provides the scientific expertise needed to impact on multiple projects in all phases of oligonucleotide based drug discovery across the RIA IMED.
* Influences the direction of the RIA oligonucleotide strategic investments
* Responsible for the design and synthesis of oligonucleotides, both internally and within collaborations with external partners, including internal laboratory work and organization of CRO work applying state of the art knowledge
* Coaches and supports scientists within RIA by advising and challenging them, but also by providing expert knowledge and interpretation of complex data.
* Will be a RIA authority in oligonucleotide chemistry and make significant contributions to the delivery of project goals
* Identifies and drives collaborations and publication opportunities. Continuously publishes and presents results from own scientific work
* The jobholder has strong written and verbal communication skills. In addition, an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a problem solving attitude and delivery focus

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Directly impacts on the RIA IMED oligonucleotide projects to ensure high scientific standards and quality of compound design to meet project objectives
* Works with Department Head and TL New Modalities at RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department to build the strategic vision for the future development of oligonucleotides and their application to respiratory disease areas
* Actively inputs across RIA IMED departments to build the RIA oligonucleotide platform
* Identifies investment needs and leads setup of laboratory capabilities
* Maintains/develops key crossfunctional interactions (e.g. Pharmaceutical Sciences, Safety)
* Secures authorship of project patent applications and leads discussions on filing strategy together with AZ patent attorneys
* Mentors colleagues by providing expert advice and support of data interpretation
* Drives RIA IMED scientific reputation by identifying and progressing publication opportunities in the field of oligonucleotides internally, across AZ and/or together with external partners.
* Identifies/engages with leading internal and external experts; prepares grant applications

Essential Requirements

* PhD in organic chemistry or biochemistry; postdoc is a plus.
* >5 years of professional experience in pharmaceutical industry or academia
* Significant experience in drug discovery focused on oligonucleotide chemistry
* Documented experience of scientific leadership within oligonucleotide drug discovery
* In-depth scientific knowledge in the area of oligonucleotides including design, synthesis and data analysis proven by track record of project deliveries, publications and external presentations
* Experienced in the use and application of modern synthetic, analytical, biophysical and computational techniques used to progress oligonucleotide based projects
* Familiar with recent developments in areas relevant to oligonucleotide based drug discovery, e.g. pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, safety, formulation, and screening approaches
* Excellent communication and influencing skills
* Solid knowledge of pharmaceutical drug discovery process
