Mission

AstraZeneca is committed to the development of the next generation innovative respiratory medicines. The New Modalities Chemistry team in RIA leads the efforts focused on expanding the use of novel peptide and oligonucleotide based modalities and molecular conjugates in the treatment of respiratory diseases. The New Modalities team achieves this in close collaboration with scientists in the Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Science departments - all joined by the goal to discover the respiratory medicines of the future.

Job description

As Principal Scientist in the New Modalities team you are, together with the team leader, leading the scientific development in a team of scientists focused on the discovery of peptide and/or nucleotide based drugs. As a RIA authority in the field the Principal Scientist make significant contributions to define plans and deliver the goals of individual projects in the RIA new modality project pipeline. The Principal Scientist leads science from the bench, directly influencing design and synthesis of novel peptide/nucleotide based derivatives and may act as chemistry project leader in RIA new modality based projects. The Principal Scientist also makes a significant impact on multiple projects across and beyond the RIA new modality portfolio by providing expert advice in the interpretation of complex data.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

* Together with RIA Medicinal Chemistry leadership team develop the future modalities strategy, identify investment areas and lead implementation.
* Actively input cross RIA departments to build the respiratory new modalities platform. Directly impact on the RIA IMED projects to ensure that the highest scientific standards and quality of compound design are maintained
* Through own experimental work contribute to the science build and project progression in the new modalities area
* Expand the RIA IMED scientific reputation by identifying and progressing collaboration opportunities internally, across AZ and/or with external partners.

Requirements and Qualifications:

* PhD in chemistry or corresponding experience from relevant field
* In-depth scientific experience and up-to-date knowledge of recent developments in the area of peptide/nucleotide based drug discovery
* Experienced from the use and project application of modern analytical, biophysical, structural chemistry and computational techniques applied to the progress of peptide and nucleotide based projects
* Experience from pharmaceutical drug discovery and development of new modalities drug candidates

As the Principal Scientist is a senior scientific position within the RIA Chemistry Department we think that the successful candidate has excellent interpersonal skills, able to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a problem solving attitude and delivery focus. Acting as a scientific leader within the field, coaching and motivating junior staff in their scientific development are also important parts of the role. We think that the role requires strong written and verbal communication skills combined with scientific curiosity to explore and develop novel ideas in cross functional teams.
