We are recruiting three talented and motivated Preformulation Scientists to join our New Modality Preformulation team in the Advanced Drug Delivery (ADD) Department within Pharmaceutical Science at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Pharmaceutical Sciences is a department within our Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED) Biotech unit. The vision for Pharmaceutical Sciences is to deliver the therapies of the future through scientific leadership in drug delivery, design of synthetic routes and manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API). Our portfolio of projects spans traditional small molecules, proteins, oligonucleotides to RNA based therapeutics across AstraZeneca's therapy areas. ADD resides within Pharmaceutical Sciences with a mission to provide novel products to AstraZeneca's clinical pipeline.
As a Senior Scientist in the New Modality Preformulation team within ADD you will support and lead drug projects from a formulation, analytical and biophysical characterization perspective in late discovery up to candidate nomination You will also contribute to proof-of-concept testing of new drug delivery technologies, participated in exploratory research internal and external to AstraZeneca, and partnering/outsourcing efforts prior to and after candidate nomination.
Preferably, you should be experienced in formulation development, biophysical and analytical characterization for different administration routes. Insight in the early discovery process as well as clinical development are advantageous. You will work in close collaboration with other preformulation. formulation scientists and analytical chemists in Gothenburg, Sweden, Cambridge, UK, and Waltham, US. The position will report to the preformulation team manager in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Develop, characterize, and analyze delivery systems for biomolecules, supporting projects in discovery and preclinical stages of R&D.
* Transfer preclinical formulation, characterization and analytical knowledge to clinical CMC (chemistry manufacturing and control) groups in a concise and collaborative fashion.
* Participate in or lead outsourcing and partnering activities prior to or after candidate nomination
* Engage in drug delivery technology evaluation in collaboration with teams internal or external to AstraZeneca
* Generate, assess, record and report data with a clear understanding of its reliability. Interpret findings and draw clear conclusions and recommendations so that their significance can be appreciated. Engage internal collaborators in development of solutions by applying a broader perspective.
* Apply technical knowledge to drug projects and the evaluation of new technology/processes. Collaboration with specialist scientific and/or technology networks.
* Will work as a member of cross-functional pharmaceutical project teams, with a large degree of independence representing own group and area of expertise.
* Develop expertise in a scientific skill discipline and continue to demonstrate scientific scholarship.
* Remains aware of new, relevant internal and external developments that affect own area of the drug life cycle, and shares these with other members of team or function.
Essential Requirements
* MSc degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Pharmaceutics, Biotechnology, Analytical or Pharmaceutical Chemistry)
* Experience with different administration routes and formulation technologies to enable formulation development and influencing drug product design.
* Knowledge of analytical characterization of biomolecules (e.g., mass spectrometry, separation techniques and other biophysical/chemical characterization techniques).
* Experience working with biomolecules (e.g., oligonucleotides, RNA, DNA, peptides or proteins)
* Ability to communicate proficiently in English, verbally and in writing.
Desirable Requirements
* Ph.D degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Pharmaceutics, Biotechnology, Analytical or Pharmaceutical Chemistry)
* Industrial experience in formulation development, biophysical or analytical characterization biomolecules and/or complex delivery systems
* Exposure to multiple disciplines in Drug Discovery, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and related functions
* An interest in drug delivery including intracellular, physical chemistry and analytical characterization.
