The research environment Future Energy at Mälardalen University (MDH) announce Postdoctoral positions in Urban Energy Systems. Future Energy Center is one of the prioritized research environments in the university and conducts research with high scientific excellence. Situated in the "Energy capital of Sweden" research focus is on high quality scientific results in close co-production with the surrounding society, targeting both high relevance for our industrial partners as well as for public bodies. We offer a creative, strong and international research environment with a mixture of established and young researchers, with good opportunities to continue to develop individuals, their career and research network, both academic and industry-wise.

MDH in Eskilstuna and Västerås is one of Sweden's biggest university colleges with its 14 000 students and 900 employees. It has a long tradition of cooperating with society and has entered strategic agreements with both the public and the private sector. Most study programmes fall into four main areas: economy, health and welfare, education, and technology. With its research, which often takes the form of co-production on the regional, national and global levels, MDH aims to generate useful solutions for societal development. In 1999, MDH was the world's first university to be environmentally certified, and in 2006, it was the first higher education institution in Sweden to be certified for its work environment.

Position description
The projects EU-funded projects "Bringing flexibility provided by multi energy carrier integration to a new magnitude" and "World-class Energy Solutions" announces postdoctoral positions in Urban Energy Systems. The positions will be in the Energy and Electrical Engineering domains including renewable energies, heating and energy storage solutions as well as energy market issues.

In the projects, we address the future challenges of our different energy systems becoming more integrated both through technologies and business models. These addresses the challenge to rise flexibility in electricity systems, by increasing the synergies between electricity, heating/cooling and gas networks and associated systems. It is also important to contribute to the understanding of the impacts of energy-efficiency measures in interconnected urban energy systems. An ambition is to bring technical solutions, market design and business models, to be integrated on ongoing policy discussions.

The goals of these positions include:

• To propose and develop modelling and simulation structures for in-depth understanding on implications of interconnected urban energy systems;
• To contribute to the processing and integration of large-scale data from smart meters/sensors (e.g. heat and electricity) into simulation models;
• To evaluate possibilities and challenges with novel technologies and components from various stakeholder perspectives;
• To improve the understanding of the technical and socio-economic values of energy-efficiency and energy flexibility services in the future energy markets.

The positions require an interdisciplinary research interest including the targets mentioned above.

The position is a temporary employment of 2 years.

Qualifications requirements
The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil and Building Engineering, Architecture and Urban Planning or similar. In particular, the applicant should have a background modelling and simulation of urban energy systems (e.g. power, district heating), demand-side management and consumer flexibility issues, and/or renewable integration in built environment. A genuine interest in the multi-disciplinary aspects of the energy markets (systems, technologies, socio-economic, policies) and documented experience in modelling and simulation of energy system, building/user flexibilities and/or other relevant energy applications..

The position requires a strong motivation for research, good verbal and written communication skills in English.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.

Merit
An interest to apply academic knowledge and to do research in cooperation with industrial partners as well as experience from working in projects that involve achieving both academic and industrial related goals.

A background that closely relates to one or more of the four goals above will be a strong merit. The applicant should in the application explain how his/her competence matches these goals.
