The research environment Future Energy at Mälardalen University (MDH) announce Postdoctoral positions in Distributed Energy and Microgrids. Future Energy Center is one of the prioritized research environments in the university and conducts research with high scientific excellence. Situated in the "Energy capital of Sweden" research focus is on high quality scientific results in close co-production with the surrounding society, targeting both high relevance for our industrial partners as well as for public bodies. We offer a creative, strong and international research environment with a mixture of established and young researchers, with good opportunities to continue to develop individuals, their career and research network, both academic and industry-wise.

MDH in Eskilstuna and Västerås is one of Sweden's biggest university colleges with its 14 000 students and 900 employees. It has a long tradition of cooperating with society and has entered strategic agreements with both the public and the private sector. Most study programmes fall into four main areas: economy, health and welfare, education, and technology. With its research, which often takes the form of co-production on the regional, national and global levels, MDH aims to generate useful solutions for societal development. In 1999, MDH was the world's first university to be environmentally certified, and in 2006, it was the first higher education institution in Sweden to be certified for its work environment.

Position description
The KKS funded projects EXTRACT, IREST and FREE announces postdoctoral positions in Distributed Energy and Microgrids. The positions will be in the Energy and Building Engineering domains including distributed generation, building control, heating and energy storage solutions and price mechanism for end-user flexibility.

In the projects, we address extracting added values from smart meter data for building control and energy efficiency measures (EXTRACT), the integration of renewable energies and storage technologies into residential, office and industry buildings (IREST) and Pilot Feasibility of Renewable Energy Integrated with Energy Storage in Buildings (FREE).

The projects addresses the challenges of higher penetration of renewables into the built environment, higher demand on end-user flexibility in electricity systems, need of decoupling buildings or neighborhoods in order to have less dependencies from the traditional energy networks.

The goals of these positions include:

• Investigate how refined smart meter data could be used to understand the dynamics of the buildings;
• Investigate on how building energy performance (both technical and economic) could be enhanced by combining data streams from e.g. weather and spot market
• Development of energy management strategies for renewable energies and storage technologies to optimize cost and energy aspects (self-sufficiency ratio and self-consumption ratio), and to meet different consumption patterns;
• Develop, assess, and validate control strategies and optimization algorithms for buildings, photovoltaic systems and energy storage taking into consideration different energy networks synergies.

The positions require an interdisciplinary research interest including the targets mentioned above.

The position is a temporary employment of 2 years.

Qualifications requirements
The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in Energy Engineering, Building Engineering Electrical Engineering or similar. In particular, the applicant should have a background in integration of renewable energies in built environment, end-user flexibility issues, and/or using detailed smart meter data for modelling and simulation purposes. A genuine interest in the multi-disciplinary aspects of the energy markets (systems, technologies, socio-economic, policies) and documented experience in modelling and simulation of distributed energy systems, microgrids and/or building energy systems.

The position requires a strong motivation for research, good verbal and written communication skills in English.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.

Merit
An interest to apply academic knowledge and to do research in cooperation with industrial partners as well as experience from working in projects that involve achieving both academic and industrial related goals.

A background that closely relates to one or more of the four goals above will be a strong merit. The applicant should in the application explain how his/her competence matches these goals.
