Division
Our research group focuses on neuroimaging of clinical pain and cognitive aspects of pain regulation.
Also we have a strong interest in developing new approaches to neuroimaging data by studying the neuronal network architecture that underlay human brain function (the human brain connectome). We try to understand why certain individuals develop chronic pain, while others with seemingly similar peripheral pathology do not, and how positive treatment outcomes can be predicted. In addition, we perform mechanistic treatment studies analyzing the effects of drugs and non-pharmacological treatments such as cognitive behavior therapy or surgery.
Our research group represents a broad range of competences, including method development with neuroimaging research, pain physiology, cognitive neuroscience, psychology, clinical pain relief and rehabilitation. We have equipment to perform pain testing and access to facilities for genotyping and laboratory analyses. We also have neuroimaging facilities for magnetic resonance imaging (MR/fMRI, MR spectroscopy), magnetoencephalography (MEG) and positron emission tomography (PET). Important for this position is the close collaboration between our group and Prof. Peter Fransson's research group that are focused on method development and brain connectivity. Due to a generous donation from Leif Lundblad and his family to our translational pain research network, represented by Karin Jensen, Eva Kosek and Camilla Svensson, we are currently in an expansive phase with a need to recruit additional researchers to our joint projects, which this postdoc position is part of.
Duties
The postdoc will handle large quantities of already existing neuroimaging from studies on pain, and initiate a local database for prospective studies of early biomarkers for chronic pain. The postdoc will use neuroimaging data from our various projects to study the effects of chronic pain on the human connectome by means of network-based analyses. The brain imaging data will also be related to patients' behavioral pain measures as well as genetics. The postdoc will be part of our research group and apply novel neuroimaging analyses to our data. The postdoc is also expected to supervise PhD students in data analysis and drafting of manuscripts. The postdoc will be expected to author scientific articles and present data at international congresses. There is also an opportunity for the postdoc to design, plan and perform new studies while in our lab.
Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.
The applicant has to be fluent in English, speaking and writing. Good skills in manuscript writing are required. Knowledge of Swedish is not necessary for this position. Very good knowledge in programming environment such as Python, Matlab and experience with analysis of large sets of neuroimaging data using e.g. SPM, FSL is required. Experience with functional connectivity analyses, network modeling and/or machine learning approaches to fMRI data is a strong merit. Previous research experience in pain is not required but the applicant should have basic theoretical knowledge of neuroanatomy and cognitive neuroscience. The candidate has to be able to work independently and to participate in supervision of PhD candidates. Good logistic skills and previous experience of managing large datasets are valuable.
The candidate should be highly motivated, reliable, meticulous and cooperative but with an ability to work independently.
