The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Duties
Engineered nanomaterials hold great promise in a range of biomedical and other applications.

However, the biocompatibility of nano(bio)materials should be carefully evaluated. The Unit of Molecular Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine has a long track record in nanosafety research with emphasis on the in vitro assessment of nano(bio)material effects on the immune system; systems biology approaches are also commonly applied. The work is currently conducted in the frame of the GRAPHENE Flagship project, the MISTRA Environmental Nanosafety project and the H2020 project BIORIMA. We are now recruiting one post doc for the Flagship. The employment is a temporary position for 1 + 1 year.

The successful applicant will work at the Unit of Molecular Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, in a highly international environment. The post doc will focus on the biological impact of graphene-based materials using both in vitro and in vivo model systems and in particular on the interactions of such materials with the immune system and with the natural microflora. The post doc will participate in joint activities in the Flagship project including consortium meetings and the preparation of periodic reports of the experimental results.

Entry requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD degree in cell- or molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or toxicology. Experience with the following techniques is needed: maintenance of primary cell cultures and cell lines, confocal and light microscopy, flow cytometry, and other standard cell- and molecular biology techniques including RT-PCR as well as microbiology assays. In addition, the successful candidate should also be well acquainted with common techniques for physico-chemical characterization of graphene-based materials. Excellent communication skills (in English) and an ability to interact with other members of the laboratory, and with members of the consortium, are essential. Previous post doc experience and a strong publication record are preferred.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

- Curriculum vitae, including date of the PhD defense, previous academic position(s), current position, and list of laboratory skills, and a description of any previous participation in EU funded research project(s) (max. 5 pages).
- List of publications, including original articles, review articles, and book chapters (NB: do not send any reprints)
- Statement of current/future research interests (max. 1 page).
- At least two signed letters of recommendation from current or former supervisors (send scanned copies of letters).
The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
