The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of 9 divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Division
A Postdoctoral Research Scientist position is available in the research group of Associate Professor Christian Giske at the Department of Laboratory Medicine.

Assoc. Prof. Giske is also deputy head of the Division of Clinical Microbiology. The most important research activities in Giske's research group pertain to deep-characterization of molecular mechanisms of resistance, virulence, and molecular epidemiology of extensively drug-resistant enteric bacilli. Giske's research is strongly translational, involving extensive collaboration with infectious diseases (including mycobacteriology), hematology, and intensive care. Giske also has extensive international collaboration.

The group consists of one group leader, one postdoc, and 4 PhD-students. Moreover a number of senior scientists are affiliated to the group including mostly medical doctors and molecular biologists employed by Karolinska University Hospital. The group is involved in collaboration with several units both within and outside the hospital, and also with international collaborators. The group leader has a central international position in antimicrobial susceptibility testing and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance.

More information about the research group is available here: http://ki.se/en/labmed/christian-giske-group

The successful candidate will work on a project related to novel methods for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of one or several antimicrobials (combination testing), using a calorimetric method. The candidate should be able to work independently, and have excellent collaboration skills with other group members and other collaborators both in diagnostic industry and in a clinical laboratory. The candidate will also be working closely with scientists from other European countries and should have good language and collaboration skills.

Duties
• Antimicrobial susceptibility testing with reference methodology
• Time-kill experiments with one or several antimicrobials
• Antimicrobial susceptibility testing with a calorimetric device
• Trouble-shooting and development of analysis tools for interpreting the results of calorimetric testing of one or several antimicrobials
• Communicating with device manufacturers and contributing to the regulatory process

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Other requirements:
The person applying for this position should have solid knowledge on basic microbiological methods for phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The candidate should also have long-standing interest in translational/applied research and prior research experience and in-depth knowledge of antimicrobial resistance in key pathogens among Gram-negative bacilli. Moreover, substantial experience in laboratory studies aimed at performance evaluation and/or validation of diagnostic assays is desirable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

- A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
- A complete list of publications
- A summary of current work (no more than one page)
- Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.
