Department of Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden
The Department of Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden offers a postdoctoral position for a period of 1.5 years. The department specialises in applied agriculture with a holistic view, which includes both crop and animal sciences, and a clear focus on forage-based dairy production systems. The department includes a research station, Röbäcksdalen, which is a part of SITES - Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science. The research station is situated close to Umeå city centre and includes both a modern research barn with dairy cows, and excellent fields and equipment for field experiments. Umeå is an expansive city with two successful universities, SLU and Umeå University. Read more about us at www.slu.se/njv .

Project description:
Livestock production, particularly dairy production, dominates agriculture in Northern Sweden. Mixed livestock production involves integrating two or more animal species, and is more common in organic than conventional farming. Such diversified farms promote ecological benefits, create opportunities for resource transfers, and potentially increase sustainability. The objectives of the project are to characterise current organic mixed livestock farms, assess their sustainability and resilience, and co-design alternative farming systems. The position is part of a larger European project and there will be opportunities for interacting with scientists from other countries.

Duties:
The specific duties of the project are: 1. Analyse multi-country farm survey data and work with other project participants to publish the results. 2. Use a whole farm model to simulate farming systems and assess the sustainability and robustness of organic mixed livestock farms. 3. Participate in a model co-design process with farmers and other stakeholders.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, and give presentations directed both to the scientific community and to stakeholders. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop their own research ideas and will contribute to novel research proposals for submission to external funders.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have a PhD in crop science, animal science, or a related discipline. The position is intended for junior scientists and we are preferably looking for applicants that have received their PhD not later than three years ago (considering career breaks, e.g. due to parental leave). Essential skills include data management and statistics, and experience with some form of simulation modelling. Some coding ability is meriting. Good skills in English (both written and oral) are required, and the ability to understand and speak Swedish or another Scandinavian language is meriting.

Emphasis will also be placed on social skills, initiative, and the ability to work both in teams and independently.

Place of work:
Umeå

Form of employment:
Fixed term employment of 18 months with possible extension to 24 months.

Extent:
100%

Starting date:
As soon as possible or as otherwise agreed.

Application:
The application should be written in English and contain:

• Curriculum Vitae including complete publication list clearly indicating peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed publications.
• Summary of research experience indicating the fulfilment of qualifications required for the position as well as future plans (max 2 pages).
• Contact details of two references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number).
