Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies
Postdoctoral position in Aquaculture
Background
At the department of Wildife, Fish, and Envirionmental Studies, the domestication of fish from a breeding, genetic as well as from welfare and behavioural perspectives have been central research themes since the mid 80's. Feeding schedules, selective breeding, production models and evaluation of the environmental impact from fish farms are some of the applied research topics related to fish farming which are studied at the department. We have considerable cooperation with other departments at SLU, performing up to date research on new fish food sources and their effect on the quality of the fish for human consumption. We have done studies on most species relevant for Swedish fish farming: Arctic charr, rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon, perch, pikeperch and grayling. The department is located in Umeå, 700 km north of Stockholm. Umeå is the major university town in Northern Sweden and SLU shares campus with Umeå University.
Job description
Sustainable fish farming is the focus of increasing interest from Swedish authorities as well as from our university and the recruitment of a young scientist is of high priority. The area of research for this two year post-doc position may cover any topic relevant to intensive sustainable fish farming. We have access to 2 labs suitable for behavioural research as well as small scale feeding trials. These labs are equipped with aquaria, fish tanks, stream tanks, automatic feeding systems and automatic recording system for behavioural studies (PIT-tag systems). One lab has an advanced water heating system and is equipped for control of day length enabling experiments at different temperatures. We have access to high tech analyzing equipment for fatty acids and to a well equipped DNA lab as well as a fast instrument for analysis of body composition (MIT-fish analyzer). Also available is a high tech swim tunnel for measuring respiration and swimming performance and large-scale farming trials. Studies can also be performed on fish from our selective breeding programme on Arctic charr which has been going on for seven generations and has documented pedigrees.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD, not older than 3 years, in any research area within fish biology relevant for intensive fish farming. Candidates should have demonstrated evidence of good scientific capabilities and a willingness to work collaboratively.
