We are looking for a post doctoral researcher to investigate the mechanisms underlying observed patterns of herbivory using the research system Salix, leaf beetles and their natural enemies. The population processes and trophic interactions within this system are well understood, which makes it an ideal study system for this project. The aim is to investigate the mechanisms driving the tri-trophic interactions and, in addition, how temperature affects the outcome of these interactions. A general assumption is that climate change will increase herbivore damage on plants but observed patterns are inconsistent. The research will help us to understand the causes behind observed patterns and allow to us to predict future trends in insect herbivory.
The approach will be: (A) a laboratory study testing the predictions of a recent analytical model of how different trophic levels should respond to temperature and (B) a field study in which levels of herbivory and strength of trophic interactions are compared in two places with different climate (Sweden and Italy). In addition, the project may include analysis of available time series data.
The post doc would work in close connection to the larger project SAMBA (www.samba-webb.se), aiming at developing novel breeding methods in Salix to improve growth and resistance. Coppice willow plantations are used for bioenergy production. The willow leaf beetles cause damage of significant economic value.
Qualifications: Applicants should have a PhD in biology or ecology. Experience of work with trophic interactions is desirable. The applicant must have adequate skills in the English language and be able to easily communicate and discuss science.
To be appointed as a post doc, applicant should have been awarded her/his PhD no more than three years ago at the time of application. Applicants awarded a PhD degree more than three years ago can be appointed as a researcher.
Funding is for one-year employment which can be extended to two years. The position will be hosted by the Department of Ecology, SLU, Uppsala. The start date is May 2010, with some flexibility.
SLU is an equal opportunity
employer.
