Linnaeus University is a modern, international university with Småland as its base and the world as its stage. We combine curiosity, creativity and utility with an entrepreneurial thinking in education and research. Seeing possibilities and believing in the future is part of what we do every day.

We now strengthen our prominent research by recruiting 21 postdoctoral fellows.

The position is based at the Department of Social Studies, which is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The research activities will be conducted within the Sociology unit. The research group seeks one Post Doctoral researcher in computational social sciences.

Field of subject for the position

Project- Large-scale collective action in a rapidly changing environment (LARCH).

Placement

Växjö

Extent and period

The position is for 2 years, 100 %

Context of position

The rapid development in population, affluence and technology that occurred in the last two centuries has dramatically increased the scale of human impact on natural systems. Most issues related to global environmental change - from climate change mitigation, to biodiversity conservation and population control - can be understood as public-good or commonpool resource management problems, both requiring successful collective action for their solution. The resulting "cooperation games" are currently faced by millions, if not billions, of people across all continents. Achieving a better understanding of their dynamics and of the factors that can be successfully manipulated is hence crucial to face current global environmental challenges.

The new post-doc will contribute to establish a computational social science research group having a main focus on environmental issues. Her/his main tasks will be to analyse existing "big data" on "green" attitudes and behaviours from online interactions and to help the development and deployment of a platform to conduct online experiments on resource-related problems. The post-doc will also help to create a stronger research environment in relation to the activities of the Doctoral Programme in Sociology , allowing for a further development in the direction of computational and environmental social sciences.

The post-doc is expected to actively participate in the department's environment and network both internally and externally.

The new position will provide an important contribution to the setup of the international master in Applied social analysis, which will run starting from the Fall semester 2016, first in terms of improved scientific environment and, more practically, with a maximum of 20% teaching.
