The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.About the lab and the Institute

The Camuñas-Soler lab stands at the interface of genomics, biophysics, and precision medicine. Our mission is to develop new single-cell technologies and non-invasive molecular diagnostic tools to understand and predict cellular dysfunction in human disease. Our research is highly interdisciplinary in nature and combines approaches from molecular engineering, biophysics, and computational biology.

Subject area

• Single-cell genomics and cell imaging
• Renal Disease

Subject area description
This project seeks to integrate measurements of cell physiology with single-cell transcriptomics to study kidney disease and regeneration. The postdoctoral scholar will develop methods to integrate multimodal single-cell sequencing and cell imaging to investigate damage and repair of kidney cells. The candidate will work in close collaboration with the Cardiovascular, Metabolic and Renal Unit in AstraZeneca. An important aspect of the project will be to implement a single-cell pipeline to perform imaging of cells in isolation followed by single-cell RNA sequencing using a cell cherry-picking system. Methods to perform single-cell sequencing such as SmartSeq2 and 10X genomics will be adapted and implemented in the lab. Finally, the candidate will perform data analysis and integration among all the generated categories of data. Therefore, it is important to have experience analyzing multimodal single-cell data and in particular imaging data combined with sequencing data. The ideal candidate will contribute both to the development of experimental and computational methods. Exceptionally skilled individuals in either experimental or computational tools could be a good fit for the project and will be supported by other team members with complementary expertise.

Duties

• Development of protocols to perform pair single-cell transcriptomics and fluorescence imaging in the same cell.
• Perform computational integration of transcriptomic and multiomics single-cell datasets.
• Perform single-cell protocols using high-throughput liquid handling instrumentation.
• Develop and use instrumentation to perform cherry-picking of single cells.
• Analyze the generated data, design and perform validations through tissue imaging and other functional measurements.
• Lead the project, present results in group meetings and conferences, and write research papers based on scientific discoveries.
• Help supervise and mentor junior team members.

Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

Assessment criteria
The ideal candidates should have the following qualifications:

• PhD in Medicine, Pharmacy, Bioinformatics or other quantitative biosciences.
• Highly motivated, proactive, and diligent.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.
• Experience with single-cell transcriptomic experiments of human samples.
• Experience in combining cellular morphology experiments with single-cell sequencing.
• Knowledge of image analysis techniques such as hyperspectral imaging.
• Knowledge to operate a CellCelector system is a plus.
• Knowledge of single-cell analysis involving cell-to-cell communication.
• A major emphasis will be placed in personal compatibility.
• Fluency in English.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, two years with the possibility of one year's extension, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
