The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Subject area

Proteoglycans in cancer.

Subject area description

The project, in which the applicant will work, focuses on studying breast cancer, which is the most common cancer among women worldwide with a yearly incidence of almost 2 million. The 5-year survival spans from 80-90% for the early stages, falling to about 25% for advanced stages. This project aims at preparing and characterizing proteoglycan structures of human breast cancer scaffolds and of dividing breast cancer cells both in vivo and in vitro. The objectives are to define clinically useful glycan biomarkers of breast cancer cell aggressiveness, understand their functional role in cancer development and based on these findings outline appropriate individualized therapies.

Job assignments

The successful applicant will culture breast cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo in model mice, dissect tumor tissues and isolate proteoglycans from dividing cells, surrounding scaffolds, culture media and perform structural characterization of glycans and glycopeptides using recently developed LC-MS/MS technologies complementing more traditional glycosaminoglycan disaccharide analyses. The applicant will also be involved in developing novel LC-MS/MS analyses as part of a collaboration between the research group and the Proteomics Core Facility, the BIOMS node at the Sahlgrenska academy. Specific attention will be given to studies using xylosides for structural characterization of the glycosaminoglycan biosynthetic machinery of tumor cells as well as on studies of the biological effects of xylosides on tumor growth.

Eligibility

An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment

The assignment demands documented experience and deep knowledge in glycobiology, specifically proteoglycan structures and functions, as well as master competence in analytical chemistry or biochemistry. The applicant is expected to have shown his/her experimental skills and competence within the subject area through the PhD thesis. If the thesis work is in line with the post-doc project that will be a merit. The applicant is expected to have a strong driving force for science and be able to work both individually and in the research group. He/she must be able to communicate fluently both verbally and in text in Swedish and English with all members of the group as well as with members of other groups entering the project. The successful applicant must be interested in teaching and supervising students at all levels. The abilities to read and write scientific text should be well documented since the applicant will be expected to independently write manuscripts, oral contributions and parts of future applications for the project. Skills in oral presentations of scientific hypotheses, methods and results is appreciated and valued. Personal characters will be evaluated and of importance for the final decision and thus great value will be given to personal references supplied to us by the applicant.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
