The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The increasing worldwide prevalence of overweight and obesity is a most important global health threat. Carrying extra fat may lead to serious health consequences such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication in obese pregnant women and GDM increases the risk of T2D later in life. Further, many women find it difficult to lose the weight gained during pregnancy. The Institute of Biomedicine, Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine, at Sahlgrenska Academy is now recruiting a postdoctoral fellow for in depth studies of human adipose tissue and its role in development of metabolic disorders, particularly during pregnancy, and its impact on weight maintenance/reduction postpartum.

Subject area

Adipose tissue during pregnancy

Subject area description

The project includes experimental and clinical studies with focus on the human adipose tissue morphology and function during pregnancy and its role in development of inflammation and insulin resistance/GDM as well as its impact on weight maintenance/reduction postpartum.

Job assignments

Responsibility for logistics and collection of data in a new clinical study of pregnant women, information to and examination of participants including analysis of body composition, and sampling of adipose tissue (needle biopsy). Eligibility

An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

We are looking for a passionate and creative postdoctoral fellow with experience of clinical studies. A medical degree as well as experience in the fields of physiology/pathophysiology during pregnancy, metabolism/endocrinology and body composition are valuable qualifications. Experience of adipose tissue needle aspiration and analysis of body composition using air displacement plethysmography is also a valuable qualification. Other merits are experience of analysis of adipose tissue/adipocytes (including cell/tissue incubation, microscopy and computerized image analysis (Tissue Studio) and immunological techniques), development/management of databases and an interest in statistical analysis. The applicant is expected to work both independently and in collaboration and to speak/write Swedish and English fluently.
