Project description
Nitrogen (N) deposition over European forests has remained high over last decade and this has led to renewed concern of nutrient imbalance for forest growth and consequently increased risks for N leaching. This employment addresses the importance of soil nutrient status, especially N and Phosphorous (P) availability, for leaching of organic and mineral N and P from forest ecosystems.

A process-oriented biogeochemical model will be further developed and tested on data of long-term forest experimental sites e.g. Skogaryd, Stråsan and Gårdsjön. The target is a risk assessment of the possible impact of climate change, N deposition and forest management on leaching processes and consequently risks for forest health and eutrophication at the ecosystem and the catchment scales. The combined impact of changes in temperature and precipitation is of special interest. The postdoctor is expected to make an analysis of possible trade-offs between management minimizing nitrogen and those minimizing phosphorous leaching.

The hoder of this position will collaborate within the BECC-program (Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate; www.becc.lu.se) between Universities of Gothenburg and Lund, as well as with Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL).

Job assignments
The employment includes a variety of assignments such as; (further) development of a biogeochemical model adjusted to the research questions, trend-analyses of soil and stream water chemistry, scenario and risk assessment. Some fieldwork may be included.

The position might also include limited teaching and the supervision of MSc and PhD students as long as it fits with the primary job assignments.

Eligibility
The applicant must hold a PhD in an area relevant for the tasks at hand, Biogeochemistry, Biophysics, System Ecology, Soil Science, Forestry or related subject, or a foreign exam similar to a PhD exam in a relevant area. Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Applicants with a degree awarded earlier may also be preferred if specific reasons exist. Such specific reasons may be a leave due to illness, parental leave, military service or a union post.

Assessment

The assessment of candidates will be based on the following attributes and fulfillment of the application criteria:

Scientific skills are the most important selection criteria for the position. Emphasis will be placed on experience in the subject area and the work tasks that are included with special emphasis on competence in biogeochemical modelling and programming. Scientific skills are assessed primarily on the basis of the applicant's scientific publications, experience of postdoc- or other research visits, conference participation and the applicant's experimental and system analytical competence.

Experiences of dynamic process-oriented modelling and programming (f. ex. C, C++ or MATLAB) are necessary for the position.

Good communication skills, written and spoken, in English as this is an international working environment.

Concerning personal qualities and skills the emphasis will be on creative thinking, analytic skills as well as initiative and cooperation abilities.

Experience of risk assessment, scenario and trend analyses and working in team are meritorious as well as experience of research communication.

The most qualified candidates will be selected for an interview, which might be held in English and could also be performed by phone /Skype.

Employment

The employment is a full-time position for two years placed at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science.
