At the department, research and education are conducted within the interaction between soil, plants, animals, environment, climate and people in production systems. The goal is knowledge of sustainable and multifunctional production systems for food, renewable raw materials and ornamental plants for the benefit of consumers, producers, the environment and the climate. The issues are linked to agri- and horticultural systems in greenhouses, in fields and in stables in a multifunctional perspective. We are looking for a post doctor for a research project on sustainable harvesting and quality of tunnel-produced strawberries. To ensure high yields with good quality, superior varieties and optimal production systems are crucial. The focus of the project is on ever bearing strawberry varieties used in tunnel production in Sweden. These varieties face challenges because of their strong reproductive ability that suppresses leaf initiation, limiting support to fruit growth and thus leading to unstable yield potential. The project addresses flower mapping, nectar content and pollination as tools to indicate stable yield potential of ever bearing varieties. The project is carried out at the Department of Biosystem and Technology at SLU Alnarp. The work involves a combination of cultivation, microscopy for mapping and assessment of bud initiation as well as chemical, microbial and molecular analyses.
Qualifications:
The applicant must have a doctoral degree in horticultural science or biology and documented competence in plant physiology, microbiology, molecular biology and metagenomics. Skills related to the use of microscopy are merit. Personal qualities such as ability to cooperate in a group, independence, flexibility and good analytical thinking ability are considered. Good ability to communicate orally and in writing in English is a demand.
