The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The department is placed at three different localities: in Gothenburg Botanical garden, at Medicinarberget in Gothenburg, and at the marine research station at Kristineberg. The current position is placed at Medicinaregatan 18A, Gothenburg.

Projectdescription

This position will be within the Eco toxicological discipline at BioEnv, within a research group addressing the effects of environmental contaminants, from specific mechanisms of individual chemicals, or groups of substances, to risk assessment of complex mixtures. Research within the group includes field studies, in vivo and in vitro experimentation, use of biochemical and molecular techniques as well as behavioral studies, theoretical studies and meta-analyses.

More specifically, the current position will be focused on microplastics, and determination of consequences of exposure in fish species. The research field is beginning to understand the of micro plastic exposures, but these studies are limited and there are large knowledge gaps. The work will take place within a research project funded by FORMAS. The aim of the project, and hence the position, is to assess the effects of microplastics on fish, and to measure the relative propensity for microplastics to act as vectors for environmental contaminants in the food chain. These studies will be conducted using in vivo systems.

Job assignments

The post doctor will be responsible for conducting experimental research using animal models and analyzing effects using molecular, biochemical, physiological and behavioral assays. The post doc will also be responsible for analysis of microplastic particles using Raman and FT-IR techniques.

Part of the tasks within this position will be to communicate research findings in scientific publications, at national and international conferences, and potentially to relevant policy makers or the general public.

The position might include limited teaching and supervision of MSc and PhD students in the field of ecotoxicology, as long as it fits with the primary job assignments.

Eligibility

The applicant must hold a PhD in an area relevant for the tasks at hand (environmental sciences, toxicology, ecotoxicology or similar). Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Applicants with a degree awarded earlier may also be preferred if specific reasons exist. Such specific reasons may be a leave due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Assessment

We welcome applications from experienced candidates with an extensive background in experimental ecotoxicology, biochemical toxicity. Knowledge of the micro plastics research field is strongly desirable.

Proven knowledge in the principles and practice of Eco toxicological testing, fish experimentation, animal physiology, and practical experience in running laboratory assays with the application of good laboratory skills.

Experience in working with fish experimentation is necessary. Knowledge of physiological mechanisms and biochemical toxicity are also desired. Knowledge of spectrophotometric methodology, including Raman and FT-IR techniques, is welcomed.

Excellent, proven, communication skills in verbal and written English is required, Swedish is desirable, in addition to the ability to express well developed ideas and conceptual and critical thinking.

Employment

The employment is a full-time position for 24 months with placement at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science. Salary is determined on an individual basis.
