Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top universities. The University has around 45 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Your team
The accelerators at the MAX IV facility are the core components for production of the synchrotron radiation.

There are two storage rings and one linear accelerator. The largest of these accelerators is the 3 GeV electron storage ring, which is the first in the world to employ a multi-bend-achromat magnet lattice to deliver ultra-high brightness synchrotron radiation. It is the first of the new generation of storage rings with extremely low emittance, of which only three are currently in existence, while several synchrotron radiation facilities worldwide are upgrading in this direction. We intend to stay at the forefront, and are therefore already studying improved lattices. You will work in the Accelerator Development Group, with the focus to study low-emittance lattices for our 3 GeV ring.

Would you like to work at one of the brightest lightsources in the world?

MAX IV is looking for a postdoc that will study the single particle dynamics in several candidate low-emittance lattices. Both the injection process and the stored beam properties need to be studied. A sound scientific approach with systematic simulation studies will be needed. Interaction with different technology teams like magnet and vacuum specialists need to be intense all through the lattice evaluation process. Experimental tests in some of these candidate lattices are also foreseen.

Your main work tasks will be

- Contribute to the design of new lattices using the state of the art knowledge in the technologies (e.g. multi-bend achromats, longitudinal and transverse gradient bending magnets, anti-bend magnets) used to realize fourth generation low emittance storage rings
- Perform simulations of low-emittance lattices including single particle dynamics, both regarding injection processes and stored beam properties, with an accent on the effect of errors and the process of commissioning
- Perform both linear and non-linear magnet lattice evaluations iteratively
- Use optimization tools, preferably in a multi-objective fashion (e.g. MOGA), to refine the searches of lattice candidates
- Take part in meetings with accelerator physicists and engineers in order to find feasible solutions
- Find ways to explore the feasibility of your findings in the presently working accelerators at MAXIV
- Participate in the operations of the MAX IV accelerator systems.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

- PhD in accelerator physics including single particle dynamics, or equivalent.
- Experience with storage ring lattice simulations using codes such as Accelerator Toolbox, Elegant or similar
- Theoretical and practical experience of storage rings, and familiarity in the calculation and optimization of the main key performance parameters characterizing a successful candidate lattice, such as dynamic aperture, local momentum aperture, tune footprint and, in general, all those observables whose performances are typically impaired when implementing lattices with high gradients.
- Experience in working in a team of a few persons with the same goal and skills as you, and judging how you can contribute most efficiently to reach the goal.

Below are seen as merits

- Knowledge in high gradient magnet technology
- Knowledge in permanent magnet technology
- Knowledge in magnet field measurements
- Knowledge in vacuum technology.

As a person you are eager to perform theoretical studies, with a critical eye on the feasibility of the proposed solutions. Good communication skills are considered an important asset.

Eligibility
Appointment to the position of postdoc requires that the applicant has a PhD or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the application deadline. Under special circumstances the PhD can have been completed previous to the aforementioned three years.

Further information
This is a full-time, fixed-term 2-year employment. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement "Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor-2022-02-01" ("Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow, 2022-02-01")
