State-of-the-art flat optics components based on multifunctional metasurfaces are looking to replace traditional optical components in many applications. Join a team with decades of experience in nanophotonics and contribute to projects that aim to implement new ultra-compact light-driven devices with applications in biophotonics and beyond. If you enjoy generating ideas supported by modeling and calculations, appreciate the elegant beauty of nanofabrication, and get a kick from seeing your predictions come to life in the lab, this position is for you!

Project description
This postdoc project focuses on exploring and utilizing optical metasurfaces, a new kind of flat nanostructured optical components with a wide variety of applications. We are currently developing metasurfaces integrated with surface-emitting lasers, were applications range from optical biosensing to microscopy [Juodènas et al, Light: Science and Appl. (2023) 12:251]. We also develop tiny optically driven microbots based on metasurfaces [Andrén et al, Nature Nanotech. (2019) 16:270], as well as photothermal elements for microfluidics applications [Dara et al, J.Phys.Chem. C (2023) 127:35]. The position may involve cleanroom work, optical simulations, optical experiments, and/or development of proof-of-principle devises within one or more of those projects. You will work in a team of students and senior researchers with complementary competences ranging from nanofabrication to biophotonics research.

Major responsibilities
Depending on your background and interests, you will focus on 2-3 of the following tasks: fabrication of metasurfaces, primarily using electron-beam lithography; simulation and optimization of metasurfaces, using e.g. Comsol or Lumerical; optical experiments and development of proof-of-principle devises based on metasurfaces.

Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree in physics, optics, nanoscience or another relevant field, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).

It is an advantage if you have previous experience from the field of nanophotonics, and have performed clean-room work, e-beam lithography, electrodynamics simulations, and/or optical experiments before.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
