Postdoc position (2 years), virology
Project description - Viral determinants of pathogenicity
We have previously shown that a specific internal poly(A) region in tick-borne encephalitis virus 3' non coding region influences pathogenicity and quasispecies development in mice (Ashghar et al Scientific Reports 2016, and Ashgar et al Plos One 2014).
This project aims to identify cellular and viral factors explaining this phenomenon. This is a collaboration project between Anna Överby Wernstedt, Umeå University and Magnus Johansson at Örebro University.
Methods
This study involves characterisation of the 3' non coding region of TBEV and identification of cellular interaction partners. Overexpression followed by pull down experiment and mass spectrometry will identify the novel RNA binding proteins. Further techniques involve handling of viruses, cell culture, protein biochemistry, and standard cell/molecular biology techniques. Viral quasispecies analysis will involve RNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis. Virology will be combined with cell biology and biochemical approach to identify the function of these interaction partners in the pathogenesis and quasispecies development of TBEV.
Location
Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden and the department of Clinical Microbiology at Umeå University, provides well- equipped common facilities, biosafety level 3 laboratory for virus work and excellent platforms for protein biochemistry and imaging. This creative, inspiring and highly interactive environment is excellent for collaborative work.
Qualifications
We are looking for enthusiastic candidates with strong background in virology, biochemistry, cell biological and with experience with identification and characterisation of RNA binding protein. The applicant should have received a Ph.D. in virology. Prior experience of cell biology, biochemistry, proteomics and mass spectrometry in active research lab will be an added advantage. The successful candidate is expected to design and execute his or her project independently but also work in close collaboration with the other members of the team, as well as with our collaborator in Örebro University. Eligible to apply are those who completed their doctorate within three years from the application deadline. The employment period is two years, entry by appointment.
