The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.

The candidate should be interested in working on a research question related to climate change and phytoplankton dynamics. The candidate should investigate the effect of environmental conditions and spatial-temporal variations on the ecology of brackish phytoplankton including cyanobacteria. The candidate will analyze and interpret different types of existing molecular, chemical and environmental data sets and write scientific articles in collaboration with the research group.

Qualification requirements


A PhD in Ecology, Aquatic Ecology or Marine Microbiology


Strong background in phytoplankton/cyanobacterial ecology


Advanced experience of evaluating phytoplankton molecular and genetic data, as well as chemical profiles (i.e. peptides, phycotoxins)


Knowledge of multivariate statistics and in working with statistical software such as R


Advanced knowledge of available bioinformatic tools for microbial data


High proficiency in written and spoken English


Good personal communication skills


Needed personal qualities are to be creative, good at problem-solving, a team-worker, independent, resilient, and structured.

Other assessment grounds


Documented experience of plankton/marine ecology research


Experience in conducting field surveys and experiments in pelagic systems as in laboratory analyses, molecular ecology and plankton identification are an additional merit.

Terms of employment
The position is fulltime and temporary for 10 months. The starting date is from the 1st of March 2017 or as soon as the position can be filled.

Placement city until further notice: Kalmar
