Long title: Accurate permeability prediction for "New Modalities" compounds using novel 3D physics-based descriptors

We're currently looking for talented scientists to join our innovative academic-style Postdoc. From our centre in Gothenburg, you'll be in a global pharmaceutical environment, contributing to live projects right from the start. You'll take part in a comprehensive training programme, including a focus on drug discovery and development, given access to our existing Postdoctoral research, and encouraged to pursue your own independent research in cutting edge laboratories. It's a newly expanding programme spanning a range of therapeutic areas across a wide range of disciplines.

What's more, you'll have the support of a leading academic advisor, who'll provide you with the guidance and knowledge you need to develop your career. This is an exciting area that hasn't been explored to its full potential, making this an opportunity to make a real difference to the future of medical science.

The successful candidate will join a truly multi-functional cross-disciplinary (computational chemistry, DMPK and Medicinal Chemistry) in the RIA iMED biotech therapy area and cross-cultural (industry-academia) team, where interaction with other disciplines (AZ internally and externally) will broaden the Postdoc's network and enrich his/her experience portfolio with an industrial and pharmaceutical experience.

With access to multiple resources, instruments, big data and state-of-the-art techniques, there will be the opportunity to interact and learn from AZ scientists, world leading academic experts and other Postdocs. The Postdoc will join the vibrant international AZ Postdoc community and enjoy the diverse training opportunities (including some advanced courses in Drug Discovery and Medicinal Chemistry) as well as the opportunity to acquire many valuable soft skills not easily developed in academic placements

Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

This is a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual with a strong desire to succeed in his/her research career and who is willing to contribute to the success of both AZ and the RIA therapy area in the "New Modalities" arena.

You will be expected to work independently under the supervision and guidance of world leading scientists from AZ and The University of Strathclyde, with an expectation to publish papers in a high-quality journal (at least one per year) and attend a conference each year and at each occasion present a poster or give an oral presentation.

The supervision of the Postdoc will be done jointly between AZ and the University of Strathclyde, where the successful candidate is expected to spend some time hosted in the Department of Chemistry and benefitting from world-class computational facilities, including the ARCHIE-WeSt supercomputing centre (http://www.archie-west.ac.uk/). Training opportunities will be provided through the Researcher Development Framework (http://www.vitae.ac.uk), which can lead to PGCert or PGDip qualifications.

Periodic meetings (TC, VC) including F2F meetings will be organised as required between Strathclyde advisors, AZ supervisors and Postdoc (Evaluate progress, discussions and consulting).

The Postdoc will be involved in real AZ Pharma projects and he/she will therefore have the opportunity to contribute to the exciting process of designing the drugs of the future

Education and Experience Required:

Essential:

As a postdoctoral scientist in cheminformatics specializing in computational modelling of permeability the following qualifications are essential:
Highly motivated individual with a strong desire to succeed and the ability to work independently
Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English
A PhD in a relevant subject (cheminformatics, computational chemistry, chemistry)
Basic knowledge in programming
Basic knowledge in machine learning
Basic knowledge in Cheminformatics and QSPR modelling
Basic Knowledge of molecular modelling

Desirable:
Basic knowledge in medicinal chemistry
Basic knowledge in phys-chem properties
Experience in modelling peptides and macrocycles
Proven experience in programming in a language relevant to the project like C++ and/or Python
Application of machine learning to relevant scientific problems (prediction of phys-chem properties)
Knowledge in Reference Interaction Site Model (RISM) of the Integral Equation Theory
Knowledge in quantum chemistry and statistical mechanics

Skills and Capabilities required:

As a RIA DMPK & Cheminformatics Postdoctoral Scientist you will be:

Extracting and integrating data sets

Applying state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms

Calculating novel type of descriptors to be applied to novel beyond-rule-of-5 compounds

Interact closely with experimentalists that will validate your predictions

Aiming to publish in high-impact cheminformatics and medicinal chemistry journals

This is a 3 year programme. 2 years will be a Fixed Term Contract, with a 1 year extension which will be merit based. The role will be based at AZ Gothenburg (Sweden) with a short stay at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (Scotland) with a competitive salary on offer
