Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.

The Balder beamline is dedicated to XAS and XES techniques in energy range 2.

4-40 keV. The beamline is in commissioning phase at the 3 GeV storage ring at the MAX IV Laboratory and is expected to go into user operation 2019.

Background
Soil organic matter (SOM) stores a large part of the Earth's carbon. Yet, our understanding of the molecular processes that control the stability and mobility of SOM is limited. This, in turn, limits our ability to predict how SOM will respond to environmental changes. The fate of SOM is influenced by the complex microbial, chemical and physical interactions in soils, which calls for a cross-disciplinary approach to advance this area of science. One area of particular interest is the interactions between Fe and SOM components, and the role of Fe in SOM redox processes.

Tasks
We are now looking for a postdoctoral scholar with a strong scientific background in XAFS and/or XES spectroscopy and a focus on biogeochemistry/environmental science to join our teams. This position is shared between the Balder beamline at MAX IV and the Centre for Environmental and Climate Research, Lund University. Your research will be conducted within the multidisciplinary research environment "Molecular Interactions Controlling soil Carbon Sequestration - MICCS", and your primary research tasks will be to investigate the role of Fe in soil carbon decomposition primarily using XAFS and XES spectroscopy. You are expected to develop new sample environments and experimental protocols to target the critical processes. As part of the Balder beamline team you are expected to participate in support to external users, in maintenance and further development of the beamline. You are also expected to promote X-ray spectroscopy to the biogeochemistry/environmental science community.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have following qualifications:

- PhD in the area of geochemistry, soil chemistry, biogeochemistry, physical chemistry or related disciplines completed not more than three years before the date of application.
- Documented knowledge and practical experience in XAFS spectroscopy methodology (data acquisition and analysis).
- An interest in the development of sample environment and experimental instrumentation.
- Fluent in English (written and spoken).
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Strong drive towards research publications.
- Demonstrated ability to work in teams and interact with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff in a dynamic environment.

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the doctoral degree or equivalent is completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

This is a 2 year temporary employment.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset. We kindly decline all sales and marketing contacts.
