"Reduction of Iron Oxide - Carbon Composites"

Minerals and Metals Research Laboratory, MiMeR, at Luleå University of Technology is active in research related to the extraction of metals from both primary and secondary raw materials. The laboratory has presently six full time professors at the university and two part time professors from industry. The full time professors are within Geometallurgy, Hydrometallurgy, Mineral Processing, Process Metallurgy, Surface Chemistry and Sustainable Production of Iron Ores. A large part of the research is carried out in close collaboration with industry and within Centre of Advanced Mining and Metallurgy, CAMM, partly funded through strategic governmental funds.

Within CAMM one work package deals with "Raw materials for future Iron and Steel Making". This part of the CAMM programme is carried out in close collaboration with Swerea MEFOS. One important topic is the use of Carbon Composite Agglomerates, CCA, where iron ore concentrates and reductant is mixed, to increase the utilisation of carbon and decrease the reduction temperature, thereby decreasing the total amount of carbon needed and the CO2 emissions.

The Post-doc position will be within an activity on "Ironmaking Development Based on Reduction of Iron Oxide - Carbon Composites by Top gases to Reduce CO2 Emissions". We are looking for a candidate with research background in the field of Ironmaking and especially within deeper knowledge on reaction mechanisms during the reduction of iron oxides with carbon in solid state. The project will benefit from the existing laboratory facilities for carrying out experiments at high temperatures, DTA-TG-DSC-MS and high temperature furnaces, as well as existing equipment for characterization of obtained materials through SEM-EDS, SEM-WDS, XRD, optical microscopy etc. Experience in using these experimental techniques and characterization methods are required.

Requirements

To be applicable for the position it is required a PhD exam, not older than three years, and within an area appropriate for the position. The position is for one year, with possibilities for extension.
