General information about Malmö University
Malmö University is an innovative, urban and international institute of higher education, located in the centre of Malmö. We have around 1,800 employees and 24,000 students. Our research and education are characterised by the role we believe a university should play in an open society - to contribute to sustainability and equality in a scientifically grounded way with external partners and stakeholders. Identifying and addressing the challenges of the future are of highest priority. Our researchers and students work collaboratively to create, share and spread knowledge in order to understand, explain and develop society - both locally and globally.

About Faculty of Health and Society
The education and research activities at the Faculty of Health and Society aim at extending the overall knowledge base in order to preserve, support, and promote physical, psychological, and social health. Research is taking place in areas ranging from science, technology, and medicine to social science. At the interfaces between them, exciting new areas for research are being generated. Post-graduate study is currently expanding rapidly. Growing numbers of post-graduates are being enrolled, more scientific tutors and tutors with research backgrounds are being recruited. The Faculty consists of five departments, among them the Department of Biomedical Science.

Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces
The present position will be a part of the large academic research environment at Malmö University, the University spanning research centre Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces. The overall objective of Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces is to produce high quality front line research within the biomedical field, to offer relevant and attractive degree programs, and to maintain good reciprocal relations with partner industries and the public sector. The centre today comprises four research groups (60 researchers) and offers a truly translational network for applied research, in collaboration with regional industry. The centre expertise covers the range from mathematical modelling to clinical sciences.

PhD-student position in Biomedical Science: Structure, Composition and Dynamics of Lipoproteins: How to Get New Clinical Markers for Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is the main killer in the western world. Current clinical praxis relies on the usage of total lipoproteins as markers for atherosclerosis, even though deaths occur in people with normal lipoprotein blood profiles. Each lipoprotein fraction presents a wide variability in both composition and structure that needs to be thoroughly assessed for more accurate use of these particles as biomarkers in the diagnostics of atherosclerosis. In this PhD project, the lipoprotein structure, composition and dynamics at model blood vessel surfaces will be investigated and correlated to the risk of developing atherosclerosis. Mapping of the lipoprotein structure will be done by small angle neutron and X-ray scattering while the compositional analysis will be done by proteomics and lipidomics, apart from biochemical assays. Despite of the importance of charting out lipid dynamics to exchange fat (lipoproteins carry fats in the body), only a few studies to date have addressed this point. We have already developed methodologies to enable studies of lipid dynamics between lipoproteins and model cellular membranes that now will be applied to systematically assess the role of lipoprotein subtype. This will advance the understanding of the initial molecular events leading to atherosclerosis and enable more specific clinical markers and more accurate early detection tools.

The main tasks of will be the following:
1. Determine the structure of human lipoproteins from a range of patients presenting different clinical profiles using SANS/SAXS.

• Isolate and/or reconstitute lipoproteins with specific lipoprotein compositions and characterize them structurally using SANS/SAXS.
• Determine the lipid exchange capacities of lipoproteins from different type of patients and with specific compositions using neutron reflection and ATR-IR.
• Establish any type of correlation between the structural and dynamic data with the composition (proteomics/lipidomics) and clinical profiles.

Although the main activities for this position are related to research, the applicant is expected to take responsibility for the maintenance of the instruments involved and to be active by supervising undergraduate students.

PhD-student position in Biomedical science
In order to be considered for appointment as a doctoral student, the applicant must meet the general and specific entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes and is considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the course or study programme. Ordinance (2010:1064). The higher education institution may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds. Ordinance (2010:1064)
